Message Board - Natural Turf: Fertiliser Application

For average size football pitch. How many bags of 25kg bags of fertiliser would be needed to spread at 35gms per metre?
Trying to plan cost for three applications next year!

12 25kg bags will cover most pitches at 35g mē.

To work out what you will need for your pitch, take the application rate (35g mē) and divide by 1000 = 0.035, multiply by the mē of your pitch. That's how I work it out anyway, others may have a different formulae.

One other tip is if you can find room in your budget, order a little more than you actually need to allow for any over application and also the linesmans runs, they will appreciate it.

If you measure your area and work out the square metres, then mulitply the square metres by 0.035(grammes square metre), then divide by 25(size of bags in kgs), this will give you the amount of bags needed.

Example:

7000 square metres x 0.035 divided by 25 equals 9.8. So 10 bags would be needed.

Other factors to take into account will be spreader settings, walking speed, type of spreader etc.

Needing so many bags Mark, buy in bulk, one pallett of 40 bags, so that you get the very best price.
Cheapest fert is likely to cost approx £15 per bag minimum if you buy a pallet, so say £600 plus VAT. So each application will be a minimum £150 plus VAT plus spreading.

Does fertiliser still come in 25Kg bags ??
I thought most (or all) stuff should now come in 20Kg bags to avoid being classed as more than a one person lift ?

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

A lot of Scotts stuff still comes in 25kgs and some in 20kgs, which can be a pain-it would be better if it was standardised acorss the board really.

At the moment i have a choice.

Also consider controlled release fertiliser. Instead of the 3 apps your looking at you will be able to do 2 - save the time and effort.
