Message Board - Cricket: Rolling - what is a pass?

Rolling….

Ok this may sound daft but what constitutes a pass?

Is it from point A to B, or is it A to B and then back along the same line?

Still Learning

One pass would be A to B then back along the same line.

One pass when ref the rolling research from cranfield uni is from a to b only. To come back down the same line classes as 2 passes.

I think I'll "pass" on this one!!!!!

and then what if you use a single as oppossed to a twin drum - is that only 1/2 a pass? Seriously though you see mention of the number of passes but surely it does make a difference? and this is without taking into account contact area, pressure etc !

I recall Alex Vickers of Cranfield University at an IOG event held at Durham CCC saying that from A to B is one pass with a single roller but constitutes two passes if carried out with a tandem roller.

In essence, if you make a sweep up and down on the same line with an Autoroller as pictured or similar type of machine, this would be four passes.

I know no boundaries.

My memory is clouded Ken, but then it would be, but i have a horrible suspision that you might be right. I will have to check.

When recording my rolling in the diary I use one pass as being from A to B.

I would say yes, but I am a poor relation as I only possess my wonderful Stothert & Pitt 32rd and its single drum.
Roll on the end of March/ start of April I say.

A roller pass in the Cranfield research was one roller drum driven over an area of the pitch – I should know as I did the research ! If you are rolling with a two drum roller then this is theoretically two roller passes. This does appear to confuse things but any rolling guidelines / recommendations should clarify this. By the way the official guidelines resulting from this research are being launched later this month at the 1st class groundsman’s meeting and should be generally available from then. I am in the process of constructing a website to give more background info and help on the rolling project results – when I get time.

Minormorris64 Can you post a pic of your unique S&P 32RD with only 1 drum? All the ones I've seen have a front (steering) and rear (driving) roller.

GOGGA

Not well up on machinery but unless it's a pedestrian roller how do you stay on top of a single drum? (Not the Cranfield one, I've seen it!)

Peter, will you be delivering the presentation at the groundsman's meeting?

10 Feb 2009 by Grassman2011

Thanks for that Pete. You did stir the grey matter Mario. Well done you.

10 Feb 2009 by pete shipton

Iain will probably be doing the presentation - he likes doing it more than me ! - but I may be there to help him out with the difficult questions !

I think the difference was, Gordon that I was in the front row paying particular attention as Alex has a habit of throwing the odd question at you without warning.

Will be interested to hear the outcome of the last three years.

I know no boundaries.

You certainly will Ken.

When you hear, you will wonder why we ever have a roller.
Will not be burning very much red diesel this year.

now where did that website link vanish to - I forgot to book mark it. Suppose I'll have to trawl through my history now to find it again :(

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
