Message Board - Football: costings
10 Mar 2009 by gary poyner
I have been asked to give a price to look after a single football pitch using my own equipment. The club want a breakdown in terms of cost for the following jobs.
A) cutting pitch and collecting the cuttings
B) cutting pitch but not collecting the cuttings.
C) slitting
D) rolling
can I have your thoughts.

It depends on a lot of factors Gary.
How productive is the machinery that you will be using?
If you are collecting cuttings, where will you dispose of them and how much will this cost?
What is your time worth to you in terms of an hourly rate?
How often will you be required to cut, slit and roll the pitch?
Will you be required to look after just the pitch, or associated areas such as training areas, surrounds etc?
You need to factor in things like this to establish what it will actually cost you to carry out the work, call it overheads for want of a better term. Once you have established this, add in what you consider a fair (or extortionate!!) hourly rate and hey presto, you have your quote.

Gary, Lots of variables to add, how far to travel, as Mike says, how much an hour are you worth, additional wear and tear etc etc etc...
Additional Insurance Cover is a must to investigate too, are you opening yourself up for risk by going beyond existing terms..
You need to start at the basics of pricing.... what does it all cost, per operation, per day/hour/sq.m, add wear and tear/replacement costs, downtime, etc etc etc
Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

Gary,
What are they going to use the costs for ? one off operations when they require it.
Far better for you to submit quotation that the cost of cutting pitch is based on a regular cutting programme.
I would always avoid giving an hourly rate in with the information, cost always by complete operations.
Hourly rate and they will be out with their watches, quote for doing work at a moderate pace.
TRy to negociate with one member of the club , not the committee.
Remember its no good to you if you get a contract which does not make you any profit, don't get tied into anything which you are not happy with.

Equipment is suitable ransomes mastiff for cutting and collecting or ransomes reelcutter if not.
Slitting will be done with sisis pedestian machine (old but effective).
The football ground is just 5 minutes away and close to another site I do work at.
Cuttings would be disposed of on site.
Price will be for complete operation (whole cut not hourly)
