Message Board - Education & Training: Posting rules

Help!

I am a little confused and need some questions answered about posting on this site?

A recent post has been closed "A stimulus to mind tissue" Although there are undertones of commercial intent, this post had more than 1600 hits in 5 days. Reading past the usual guff etc. there were some really interesting points raised and debate had and I believe a lot more to follow. This is a subject that is gaining much interest by turf grass managers throughout the industry. In the recent past, I have had many on-line and one-to-one discussions with AndyT and Ian Mac. However, throughout that time, I have never felt coerced or persuaded to purchase any of their products.

I do find their knowledge and encouraging debates thought provoking and it has helped me onto a new path of discovery. One which could change the way in which we manage our sports turf in the future. We are all too aware of the EU legislation in regard to pesticide restrictions waiting to be placed as in the rest of Europe. this sort of discussion could help so many turf managers in all areas of this vast industry.

as I say..... I am not aware of the rules of Pitchcare and although I have not made an in depth search to find the answer to this question..... I now have to decide whether I wish to continue to participate on this site in the future?

I agree with Ken. Dave read the post and not your interpretation of its content, never once did Ian enter into commercial gain. This is a sad loss to the education of many when the future will drive organics how will we be prepared for it? Your actions were wrong, owner or not. A sad day for Pitchcare, and a very sad day for education.

Ken,

Since you ask please allow me to answer your questions. The people you mention have products to sell and have insisted on using Pitchcare as a free opportunity to promote their wares on more than one occasion.

The latest thread was intriguing and undoubtedly would have been full of informative theory and practice. I have no argument there, but as I had already asked that the thread remain free of commercial interest as IM had suggested in his post it would, I felt that this had been overstepped.
Forgive me if you don't agree, but Pitchcare is a free forum for people to use for the right reasons. It survives because of our generous commercial sponsors and it has been muted on several occasions by our paying clients that some people take advantage of the service. I try to maintain a balance

If you feel Ken that this is unfair, as you say the decision is yours.

Mad 4 Mud-the melodramatic response is heart wrenching, but nothing more than I'd expect from a close friend of those named already. :)

Kind regards,
Dave Saltman

It's my opinion that Dave was correct on this one. The concept was good but the method was flawed!

Personally, I have been using Pitchcare's free services since it was first conceived and will continue to do so. I am and will continue to be supporter & I assure you that these web pages have done more good than bad over the years.

It did seem to me that there was an element of 'recruiting' going on.....

All the best

I for one can not understand why this has been closed , and wish that it had not been
but i am glad that it has been bought up tho

Do i enjoy this site yes , i find the whole site to be of great help to me in my quest for knowledge ( and to share the little knowledge that i have ), is it about commercial gain we will never no , or is there another reason ??

I too am disappointed that the thread has come to an end, however the fault is not with Dave. I try assiduously not to blatantly market myself on here - I know what is and isnt acceptible. People know who I am and what I do but are sensible enough to pm me if they want to make a direct approach. I use this to contact people who may want me to be more direct.
Its a shame Ian got a bit carried away as he is enormously respected on here as shown by the response to his thread, but none of us have the right to jeapordize Daves business by promoting our own.

I can understand how this developed, I think from knowing of parties it was inevitable....... sometimes you need a little reign in to move forwards..
like Vid and the other regular contractor/supplier trade postees we try our hardest to assist those in need of direction not our self interests, it is our ''love'' of grass and the game that makes us passionate about subjects... and I hope and know from reading IGA posts that I think it was just ''passions'' that ran away here, I have had my legs slapped before, cant remember why, but there are clear lines we, as ''trade'' have to follow and this post unfortunately crossed this.... yet there were plenty of other trade involved who have far more lucrative and established businesses involved with below the ground rather than above dropping informed response as well but with absolutely no hint of ''sell'', I guess and hope Ian just got carried away...... but he is to be fair newly fledged ''trade''.... but its done and rightly so for the integrity of what these excellent forums stand for..
Now is there any reason this interesting debate cant be restarted... by the rest of us, policed by ourselves slapping down anyone who tips their toe over the line???? I hope we can because I think it will be the crux of how we all deal with soil management within our lifetimes and the more clued up we are now the better...

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

Spot on Barry.

There is no reason we can't debate soil science on another thread (In doubt Dave would object at all?) but I would be very disappointed if the molasses mob took it over.

I'm interested in Ian's ideas generally but resent being shouted down by the gang if I disagree with his ideas or method of presenting them. Each of us should be able to put an opposing point of view without incurring the wrath of the gang?

I backed down yesterday for the sake of peace. It isn't my normal style but other posters might see it differently and be put off posting and giving us their knowledge.

If we do start another thread on a similar topic, can I please ask that we fight our own intellectual battles as individuals and not as a pack?

It's much nicer that way.

;-)

Zoid, I'm worried about you - have you had a severe blow to the head before returning to PC. Not only do you continue to be nice all the time but, as here, I keep finding myself agreeing with you. Its terrible is there an antidote!! Give me your address I'll send flowers and cuddly toys.

Hi All,

Its dissapointing that the post had to come to an end, but as others have stated it is a public forum and rules have to be abided by. Hence my full support for Daves decision on this matter.

I have always enjoyed participating and found the site extremely usefull in my first 12 years of working and studying in this wonderfull industry of ours.

We can all learn alot from each other and still can. Sometimes we may get passionate, sometimes we may disagree, but at the end of the day we are all shooting for the same goal, which is providing the best surfaces we can for our customers. Pitchcare is a super rescource for us all.

Vid, I like your comments on how you can be contacted and how you can share more advice through the pm feature and I think this method could have been used more on this subject. This maybe the way forward in future circumstances?

Ken, it would be a great shame to see you stop posting on the PC site. I feel that your sound advice has been beneficial to alot of us younger guys on here. Even though I have never met you in person, I have taken your thoughts on board and am extremely thankfull for your advice, long may this continue!

Bonne courage tout la monde. Hope you all have a good weekend.

PLEASE STOP RIGHT THERE!

Now that I understand the terms of use laid down by Pitchcare, I agree with the action Dave took. I guess I was just frustrated that a subject I am so very interested in was closed. The good news is that it looks like it will be restarted and hopefully the serious debate and exchange of brain tissue will be even more stimulating and rewarding to everyone.

Thank you for the kind words by some of you. People who know me know that I carry out my duties with an open mind. I am prepared to listen to anyone and often take their comments as sound, practical advice, some of which I add to my arsenal of tools when managing my turf, my work colleagues and myself. I learn something new every day and believe I have something to share with fellow minded people.

However..... its time to move on. Well done poa7..... Let the debate begin.
