About to use ferromex liquid iron product to remove moss on a couple of greens as another product -a granular biological /organic product that claims to kill and eat by degradation the debris /moss has not worked so far.
Has anyone used ferromex and got any tips about its use?
I also need to apply a feed on my greens at some stage as the pre mentioned granular has also provided hardly any growth either and greens looking very sickly-i will have bowlers on greens from sat so panic stations!
Would you apply granular feed bearing in mind i will be cutting at 5 mm 3 times week now and a lot of product cud end up in grassbox or a liquid feed-what makes can u suggest?
Maybe i am worrying a bit as cold temps are holding growth back-how are your guys greens?

hi ebony
Sorry i havent used ferromex so cant advise you on that but in relation to fertiliser, have you considered not useing boxes for a few days till the fert has desolved or if you contact your local Andersons supplier, They have a product called Nutri-g which has a granular fertiliser which desolves nearly straight away so can cut with boxes the next day. As for what to use? maybe 18-9-18 might be a good kick start as i think its a 60% slow release.

Hi Ebony ,
I've used Ferromex on 5 cricket squares and 3 bowling greens and it's worked fantastic. It was the 1st time I've used it and was a bit worried about the high application rate (3 litres of ferromex and 5 litres of water does 100m2 )but it was ok . I was also told it works ok at 1/3 strengh , and a bowling green was done at this rate which also looked great . It contains nitrogen and will give it a boost for about 2 weeks before you can add some more fertiliser .You will see the results in hours at the full rate .
thanks guys, first ,glen, where can i get supplies of the andersons contec dg fertiliser and steve, what rate did u use the ferromex on your bowls greens?-remember i have a lot of moss to kill-was it a safe product to use?

Ebony - depending on where you are based Andersons is available in Ireland and South england from Turfcare www.turfcaregroup.com for contact details.
I think Greentech www.greentechsportsturf.co.uk supply it in Scotland.
Hello Ebony,
i presume you are talikng about MO Bacter?
Only meant to apply between April and September....maybe thats why it hasnt worked?

Mo bacter claims that over supply of potash causes the moss to die off - why the moss would and the grass wouldn't I don't understand. At the recommended rates it would give 50kgs of N and P and 200 K per hectare. i wonder what the potash source is as I can't see any info on it.
Fair point about temperatures being low and i know it suggests soil temps of 8-10 degs but i was hoping to have seen more of a reaction after nearly 6 weeks from being applied.(has anyone else used the product this year- if so any sucess?)Also needed granules washed in before low cutting and bowlers on green hence applied earlier than april.
I think the product may work better when applied in sept due to warm soil and will probably give it a go then. This will give me a more definitive answer as to whether it works.
Trouble is i need a quick fix for moss and to make greens look reasonable so hence my original question.

Re MO Bacter - havent used it but they say apply spring/early summer for moss killing, or late summer/autumn to stifle winter development. Apparently, Potassium kills and bacteria eats it!!
On your current problem, can you do a light scarification, lift moss out and therefore improve chances of remaining moss drying and dieing off?

What science book suggests potash kills moss?
Hi Gordon
I would have to agree, if potash kills moss please let me know as i have never heard that before??????????

I have used Mo Bacter with reasonable success; certainly the soil temp was 16 degress C when applied and the moss goes brown, crumbles and then starts to disappear. I was advised not to mow for a week, preferably 10 days. I think watering in speeds it up and I also think maybe the application rate is a little conservative; I would probably apply thicker. Lovely stuff to use tho - smells like cocoa!
