Message Board - Natural Turf: Hydrated Lime

21 Apr 2009 by Mark Jones

Can anyone confirm if Lime for Marking is actually illegal? I know it is not recommened by the IOG. I do not use it myself but the question came up today with a friend of mine.

Is there any official documents that has the answer to the question?

If it is'nt it should be. There was a goal keeper who suffered terrible burns from lime line marking. I believe he was awarded a large sum in compensation.

The goalkeeper concerned was Andy Dibble playing for Barry Town in a League of Wales fixture in 1999. He was awarded £20,000 damages having suffered lifetime permanent scarring.

I still cannot remember whether or not it is illegal but I know that everytime I see a bag of it in a groundsman's shed(which still happens) when visiting clubs on ECB business, I ask them to remove it permanently and include a seperate sentence highlighting the health and safety risk in my Pitch Advisors report.

I can't find any specific law regarding the above (not yet, anyway) but FEPA seems to be the statutory instrument concerned:
