Message Board - Bowls: dead moss on bowling green
7 Jun 2009 by britboy
just killed off a lot of moss on one of my greens about 5 weeks ago with ferromex which worked brilliantly but of corse have been left with the black /brown dead stuff. Have been verti-cutting like crazy for last 3 weeks with my thatchaway machine which has been removing lots of debris and also making the green bowl fast as lightning but some of the members been moaning saying that although its bowling well it looks awful which i have to agree with. I cant remove the moss any more severely without creating bare spots so i wonder if anyone has any suggestions on a product that would help green up the green without excessive growth or any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated. The problem is this green was inherited with a big moss problem by me and this year am really going for it to rip it out once and for all-just cant get it through to some members that i cant do it all in one go !

If you had a lot of moss then it's going to look a lot worse before it gets better.
Somehow you've just got to get through to the members - or at least get all the committee on side and have them try explaining it.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

If you've got a lot of moss ebony, don't forget you need to treat the cause as well as the symptoms.
ie plenty of aeration combined with the verticutting.
As to the members; I bet it's the ones who used to have an advantage bowling corner to corner who are complaining?
(Probably a flat green so above may not be relevent)
