Message Board - Cricket: How not to respect your square

On going back to the square this evening to put the water on, this is what i find , a nice little chap had marked out his fielding position right on one of the wickets, oh joy i mumbled ... and a little worse than that !!.
these were 11 and under and certainly no respect for a cricket square.

Don't blame the kids! What t**t is coaching them to do this?
I've seen County under 15 teams do it when they came and played at our club. They haven't been invited back!

Same t**t who doesn't teach kids how to make a batting mark, so they scratch forwards from the crease line rather than back towards the stumps and frequently at full boot width rather than a narrow score.
But I DO blame the kids too. They may be only 11, but that's old enough to understand something as basic as this.

I used to be a Teacher. You'd be surprised!
They don't always do everything they are taught / coached but this is not an activity they bring with them from the womb, someone has told them to do it.

Not only kids, we watered both squares all day yesterday only for the club to take a cage onto the second square at 6pm.

Saltire.gif 24 Jun 2009 by mario

Whilst watering a couple of pitches in preparation for the internationals we have here I was aware, in my peripheral vision, someone approaching me.

I turned around to discover that it was our President.

"I take it that you walked around the square to get here" says I.

"Oh yes".

"Then why are your footprints right across the pitches which I have just watered?" !!

At that, he changed the subject!

We had a home game the other day in the top Oxford league and some dosy pillock started scrapping his footmarks on the square. I was opening the batting, square leg umpire spotted it and told him to stop it, some fella joined in, so did i!, it nearly all kicked off and that was before our innings!.

24 Jun 2009 by jlawrence

i've given up asking people nicely to walk around the square. They've been told quite simply: get caught taking your bag across my square again on way to nets and it'll be the last grass track your team get.
One of our ground share teams kept insisting on driving across the outfield to get to the nets. I angled the rollon net we were using which put their cars directly in line with an extra cover drive. A few words to the batsman and bowler, and a few dints later - hmmm not seen said cars on ground since :)

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

My two penny worth,
I used to work with a bloke who didn't give a toss what they did as he had long since given up asking.
I am getting the same as I am at the wrong side of 60 and don't want confrontations as I easily get wound up by people's (players) lack of respect for my efforts.

I started on a new strip on the practice area for use on Thurs.
This was on Monday and when I got in Tues am they had held an impromptu practice on it which in itself is not a problem as that is what it's there for except the had put the cage on about a third of the way up the strip so when I mark it tomorrow the cage will be where it should be and the worn bit will be "on a length" *********em
It's good to see that I am not on my own in coping with these nuggets, they must move amongst us all.

One Thursday evening I arrived to find some of our lads just moving the net onto the track that I had prepared for Saturday's 1st XI game.
"Well, you can mend it again in time for Saturday, can't you?"

They haven't tried that again since for some reason!

Trust me, I wasn't that calm at the time! Although I don't worry about it as much as I used to.
I tend to think these days that they play on it, so if they ruin it they are only hurting themselves!
Does go against the professional pride somewhat though.

I was re-marking a pitch between 2 U-13 matches this afternoon when the visiting coach brought his team out for a warm up and began setting them on shuttle sprints up and down the square, including the 1st XI pitch for Saturday and a repaired and re-seeded one!
I am amazed at my politeness in asking him to please not continue to do so.
It's catching - this was a South African Under 13 District representative side !!!

I had the Scots vs the Kiwis here last year in a Tri-series of ODI's with Ireland.

3 strips had been put aside on the square: one for batting c/w cage and two for bowling.
A pair of the Kiwis decided that to bowl on a brand new, untouched pitch was just the ticket. Bowling at full whack on an unprepared surface tore chunks out of it.

You can guess that I wasn't best pleased!

.....and don't get me started on the Scots!!

p.s. The Irish lads were perfect gentlemen I should add!).

I know no boundaries.

We,ve got them in 12 days Vs Lanc's.
Had owt to do with them, then??

Last Friday we had the Aussies in doing some fielding practice ( they didnt use the square) but every one of them walked around the square to get to the pavilion, which was a nice suprise!!

25 Jun 2009 by bridgfordian

Last night we had a U 15's match.
Wicket cut refreshed the wicket marking, wicket covered and a U 15 painted behind the stumps club house end. Wicket next to it had a Sat/Sun sign . Someone had scrapped the 2 lots of signs out and they play the U 15 game on a wicket they had use last week which I had repaired the ends only, so the wicket markings was almost none existent. Also do you find that the kids are worst at marking their bowlers run ups.

Sorry Chris, as much as I would like to have something to do with the Scottish Under 17 Ladies I fear that I am almost old enough to be one of their grandfathers. LOL.

Only the guys up here,I'm afraid.

I had Wales 1st XI down here a couple of weeks ago for a minor county match. I had prepared 2 strips on each end of the square for practise. After watching them set up to prepare to practise (only bowling) off the square i had to tell them it was ok to use the prepped wickets. They seem to have a certain respect many teams don't. Thanks Guys.

Andy, I've seen that with visiting 1st teams - they go and warm up next to the practice square. Seems a common thing that they (quite rightly) assume that they can't warm up on the square - somehow they interpret a prep'd track 25 yd from the boundary as being on the main square. I've told a few, but they still carry on warming up on the outfield.
Conversely I've seem numerous junior teams warm up on whatever track seems handy - which is often the next saturday's track. Is it lack of respect, or (as I suspect) lack of understanding by the managers - I never come across it where the manager is a regular player.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Yes i had the same problem on sat 3 wkts prepared for cricket week and the visiting school was just picked the nearest to practice on luckily i spotted the stumps going in i think i could be heard 5 miles away. They did move and appologised there goes my attempt not to be a grumpy groundsman finished. WD
