Message Board - Football: Aerated

Ashton Logo.JPG 28 Jun 2009 by Aladdin

Managed to aerate the pitch with me little Aercore 1000 today. Because, as a colleague of mine said earlier this month (and earlier last month funnily enough), "You can never have too many holes"!!

Also mowed the pitch maintaining the HOC at 1¾"

Still a few sparse areas to sort out.

Mal, you have an impecable sense of tining!

Sumo,

At the moment I only have ⅝" tines. I plan to visit a local JD dealer who, unfortunately(?), is more agri orientated but maybe they can order me some needle tines etc. Otherwise I'll have to go further afield.

Mal,

At least you know that someone's reading it!! And taking it in.

Oh dear!!

What happened there? That was the five-eighths fraction when I typed it. I wonder.................⅝

Ashton Logo.JPG 29 Jun 2009 by Aladdin

Nope! That didn't work.

When I say I typed it I mean I dragged and dropped it from the Character Map. Looks as though the Message Board can't deal with it.

If ever there was a good indication of the power of what a spiking programme can do I have a picture here for you of the edge of my bowling green that always seems to dry out no matter how much I water but you will notice the pronounced greening around the spke holes form previous spikings where the grass has been encouraged to go and look for its own water.

Thanks for that, Mal. Should help others as well.

How deep do you spike? (I know the depth should vary)

My Aercore, sorry, my posh Aercore only goes to a depth of 4". Although I seem to remember someone saying a depth of 7" could be achieved with care. The poster in question, if I recall correctly, had a 1500 for whatever difference that might make

Edit: Forgot to say, I'll have to go further afield for my tines. It seems the JD agri dealer is not allowed to deal in Groundcare products.

On the bowls green I generally spike down to 4 inches and occasionally 5 using our Groundsman spiker. I don't go any deeper than this on the green as I would be into the clinker base. On the football pitch we vary greatly with a new tines on the vertidrain we generally get down between 8 to 10 " We will start our program with the vertidrain on our pitch one with new tines and as they wear, we start with the new tines on a different pitch next time so they all get a mixture of depths. We intermingle this with surface spiking with our quadraplay down to 2 inch and also inter mingle with our McConnel Slitting spiker which will spike to 4 to 5 inches. I've never had any experiance with a aercore (far too posh for a mean old codger like me).

Cheers Mal.

It bothers me a little that the Aercore doesn't go deep enough. However, some aeration is better than none I suppose. The Groundbreaker will go to a max of 10" but I've been advised to be rather judicious with it's use as, so I'm informed, although it'll close over at the surface the slits will still be there underneath and there's a danger of destructuring.

By the way, what variation of tines do you use on the Vertidrain for the footy pitches?

Lets see if 5/8" fraction works for me

Ashton Logo.JPG 30 Jun 2009 by Aladdin

Yeah, I could've done that but I was trying to do it "properly" as in:
¼
