3rd Jul 2009 by george hunter
am getting many complaints from the bowling team about the length of the grass, many are saying it is to long and heavy going. i mow at 7mm at the moment, but were they have just been bowling the green is brown but very fast.
i mow every other day i.e monday wednesday and friday.
what is the answer.

Hi George
You are right to raise your hieght of cut at the momont particularly if you are in the dry hit south east. I generally cut at around 5mm during the playing season but have raised the hoc to 6mm until we get a return of some rain. I too cut Mon, Wed & Fri's.
Height of cut dosent always tell the story of why a green is not fast. If you are protecting your green then you will need to tell your bowlers of your concerns and that in doing so the green will be better for it later on.

Hi George,
I wont go below 6mm, the green is extremely quick this season and as Mal says, that is not due to the length of grass, rather the fact that the green became hard in April and has remained that way. Long may it continue.

I have been cutting at 5mm all summer. Applied primo max on at least two occasions this year and i only cut twice a week.

I mow Mon - Wed - Fri and at a hieght of 5mm. I totally agree with Mal if you are going through a drought spell to raise the hieght of cut by 1mm or 2mm.
