Hi guys, I had our pitch sprayed with Selective herbicide called Greenor in April. it did a wonderful job at the time in controlling the major weed problem that we had.
but now alot of weeds are starting too come back like plantains. i notice that they have seed heads on them.
when spraying in april. i was advised to get it sprayed again in september!
Or should i get it sprayed sooner than that before new weeds start to develop?
we seeded pitch 20th may . the label says that you should not spray weeds until 2 months after seeding pitch.
what do you guys think?
the ingredients in greenor are, fluroxypyr clopyralid MCPA

As far as I know almost all herbicides state not to use during drought conditions and may also state only 2 applications in any one season. It comes down to a matter of opinion as whether that’s what we are experiencing at present, also depends a bit where you are in the country. What I do know is, that in central southern England it is parched, consequently I personally wouldn’t waste the time & money for perhaps at best a limited control, at worst an adverse effect on the grass. I would say wait until the Autumn, if nothing else you will catch anything that germinates between now & then.
Well it has cooled abit here in cornwall at present. with some rain.
but i agree waiting until Autumn for second application. to catch anything to germinate between now and then.
what is the process of weeds developing? I know they are actively growing between April-September. does that mean that they will be seeding constantly through these months? So basicaaly the spray in April probably did not do anything for the seed that already went to ground? isnt there other types of herbicide for stopping weed seed germinating??

Check out Spearhead, they claim it controls for a season I believe?? Your treatment in April should have hit any developed weeds present at the time, dependent on chemicals effectiveness on the specific weeds present, their stage of growth & rate of application.
Not 100% sure, but don’t think weed plants will carry viable seed heads over winter, bit academic really as there will be a weed seed bank in the turf any way & given the opportunity these may germinate when & if conditions are right. Having said that they spread by different methods & set seed at different times, some by seed (airborne or dropped) others by rhizomes & some by both, some early in the season others later.
If you scheduled 3 applications of weed spray you should be near 100% weed free for at least a season. E.g. Year 1 – Spring & Autumn treatments, Year 2 – Spring treatment. Or Year 1 – Autumn treatment, Year 2 – Spring & Autumn treatments. You may be lucky that after possibly 2nd blanket spraying that you can get away with only having to spot spray; this should certainly be the case year on year from there on. Any reduction in the use of chemicals is good in my book, if only doing things organically was a little less time consuming, but that shouldn’t stop us from trying! One last point, don’t, forget to over seed, those pesky weeds will love any bare ground left by you killing off their mates.
