I am no expert but have experienced big problems with moss. As I understand there is nothing currently on the market that will remove moss. Iron will turn it black and make it unhealthy but it will not kill off the spores. It also doesn't really get rid of it because as I found out instead of your square having lots of green moss patches you just end up with lots of black dead?moss patches.

Greg,

You are supposed to rake the black dead moss out of the sward.

Don't mow it so short.

After killing the moss (ie turning it black) you need to remove the dead stuff from the surface - raking or a stiff brush should work fine. Depending on the amount of moss you may need to then get some grass back in to replace it.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I have tried raking off blackened areas and this for me, when I carried it out in April, left a pretty ugly site and I found it impossible to remove all of it.

This action also doesn't, as far as I understand, remove the spores, so the moss hasn't really been killed off and presumably will return.

I would very much appreciate your thoughts on this to help me irradicate the moss which for me is the biggest problem with maintenance of our square.

Greg I think you need to kill the moss & rake out the as you dont want it on the surface of a pitch to be played on.

Yes it may look unsitely for a bit.

Next thing to look at I believe is underly reasons for the amount of moss. Do you have a strong sward as moss will encroach in the right conditions. Also is ground shady, what aeration has taken place in renovations.

Generally speaking Gregg, you need to grow a healthier sward. You need to plant more grass, keep it fed well and almost certainly keep the surface spiked throughout the winter.
My winter feed always includes some iron and i find the very little moss that i get not worth worrying about.
It will also pay not to let your grass sward grow to long.

My understanding of moss is this:

1 You need to wait till it's completely dead before raking it out. I believe that this will take 2 - 3 weeks.

2. The spores are at the top of the plant and the plant dies from the bottom up meaning that the spores are the last thing to die off. Consequently, raking it out too soon means that you are just spreading the spores.

That's my take on it, anyway. Others will be better qualified to advise than I.

From the posh end of the room!!
