Message Board - Irrigation: Travelling Rollcar Sprinklers
8 Jul 2009 by Mark Boundy
I work for two private sports clubs who have differing irrigation issues. We have plenty of hoses and a few sprinklers but getting around to watering everything efficiently is very difficult. I have been told to look at these Rollcar Travelling Sprinklers which claim they can cover a football pitch in two passes. Has anyone any experience or knowledge with these machines? Are they what they claim?
I am hoping they might be the answer, instead of manually moving one sprinkler at a time. Any information would be greatly recieved

Mark, you mention Irrigation issues briefly, be aware that anything resembling the speedyrain travellers (excellent looking bit of kit, we just supplied 2 to a school in London as part of some pitch reconstruction) needs a minimum of 4.5bar to operate efficiently, pressure below this may well not be sufficient, check you supply before you get carried away

i agree with barry..it is vital that your supply is great enough to make the irrigator travel...otherwise it,ll just sit there an dribble....
i used a Rollcart traveller and i found it a fantastic piece of kit..i purchased it from Hortech Systems..and they supplied a storage tank which is mains fed thru a ballcock, then 150m of trico hose as well as an electric intermediate pump...it will at a push water an average width pitch in 2 passes, the spec for the bout width says 30metres... but i used to do it in 3.....i run thr irrigator from 18yd box corner thru to other end 18yd box, then for good measure i run it straight thru penalty/centre spots...i slowed it down on the turbine and completed a run in 6 hrs......dont ask me how much water that is ...but the tank was more than adequate to cover a run...

Thanks for the advice gentlemen, most appreciated. Currently we have three seperate water points on the field, supplying two cricket squares, one large one small. All have excellent pressure and can comfortably supply two static sprinklers each. The sprinklers are fairly large with decent coverage so I think the pressure should be ok. The main benefit im looking for is that I can leave the machine to water large areas on its own and not have to move static sprinklers every hour. If this works ok, I can move it from pitch to pitch every couple of days.
Maybe I should try to get a supplier to come down and do a demo for me. That should be able to prove if the pressure is ok.
Once again gents, many thanks

Mark have a look at the travelling sprinklers in the Pitchcare Shop. Look under irrigation. There are three models that will work off standard mains water pressure that follow the hose pipe and can be set to shut off automatically when they reach a set point. They dont give out as much water as the tank fed pumped types but are much cheaper.

I can reccomend the speedyrain 25/50, works off a minimum 1.5 bar mains pressure, also a very good price, only downside is the hose length is 50m but not the end of the world ( if you go for the larger version for 90m hose, but then you need a higher bar pressure (4.5 bar) as Barry and Ticky say.
