Message Board - Natural Turf: Aeration with Slitter

1 Aug 2009 by Mark Jones

How effective is slitting? we do vertidrain 2 times a year. May and this year october or as close to winter as possible. but we been advised to slit the pitch regularly aswell. does anyone else incororate the two types of aeration? I am phoning the farmer that does it this week? Is there anything essentail i should be asking him about his slitter?? My first question would be does he have turf tyres! Im thinking getting him in once a month if weather permitting.

different aeration during good ground conditions is the most beneficial, if you can slit regulary , especially after verti draining you will have more chance of keeping the surface free draining and reducing waterlogged / wet pitches.

We slit once a week, weather permitting, I find it to be partiularly beneficial if you can slit just before heavy rain when forecast . Although I have an excellent draining pitch,it does save on the divots

Make sure his slitter has a guard fitted to cover the top half of the drum. (H&S). You will be working in a public place and don't want any chance of an accidental impalment.

As well as the aeration benefits, slitting also prunes the roots of course.
