Message Board - Cricket: Light roller

_lg_badge__1518.jpg 9 Aug 2009 by widdywoo

Our light roller has finally gone belly up, so I'll be needing a new one next season.

I've been looking at the one in the shop - http://www.pitchcare.com/shop/handy-rollers/hand-garden-roller.html

Do you think that this would be heavy enough for the between innings roll? I've only ever had the old iron ones before and I'm not sure what they weigh. They seem hard to find these days.

I'm in West Lancs, which is a bit far I think. Many thanks for the offer though.

At 120kg fully ballasted, that's about the same as a half tonne twin drum meter wide roller. So I guess, yes, it is heavy enough for light cosmetic work. I suspect you need to ballast it with dry sand followed by water to get full weight.

Try looking on Ebay as well. You find quite a few of the 'light' iron type rollers on there - it's just a case of keeping an eye out for one near you.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Thanks guys - we rarely get asked for the roller in our league, but it's a bit embarrassing when we do get asked and I have to say our light roller is out of action.

I have looked on eBay, JL - most of them were similar to the one in the Pitchcare shop.

widdywoo - yes, most are like those in the shop. But you will find cast iron rollers on there as well. Try searching for "cast roller" or "antique roller".
I'll be hunting over the off season for another myself - mine spent 9 months in the rhine before we spotted where the little oiks had put it.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Just in case anyone thought jl had emigrated to Germany, the rhines (pronounced 'reens') he refers to are drainage ditches used in his part of Somerset, as this reference from History-Torist.com says:

Travel south-west and the landscape abruptly changes forming a wide basin of fenland known as the Somerset Levels - also called the Plain of Sedgemoor near where the last major battle was fought on English soil in 1685. The levels represent land reclaimed from the winter flooding that annually turned the area into a huge lake, but is now rich pastureland. Drained in the Middle Ages, it is intersected by a maze of drainage ditches known as rhines

Good luck with your roller hunting widdywoo!

Thanks guys - the old cast iron ones seem to be pretty scarce now, but thanks for the search tips. I'll have another look.

Hello digger.

A bowling club I look after has one that hasn't been used for the three years i've been going there.

They might not want to sell it but I'll ask.

Many an old house may well have one laying around at the bottom of the garden. Try local adds.
