Message Board - Football: Football nets

11 Aug 2009 by Simon Glanfield

At a game i went to the other day the groundsman there held his nets down with a frame type structure instead of having to peg them down, and at the end of the game he simply lifted the said frame and locked them to the goalposts, no taking pegs out then back in days later.

My question is.....
Where can you buy such an item?
What sort of price are they?
And has anybody made a set up themselves and if they have how and what was used?

Many thanks for any replies

They are not cheap but they can be made relativley easyily and cheaper with some steel tubing and connectors.

Think you can buy a full set for around £1300 inc posts nets etc..

We made our own from alumminium tubing, they work a treat.

What are the health and safety implications from making them ourselves? Surely they have to meet a certain standard

Grassman , they just sit on the ground pegged in place so there are no significant H&S implications.

Until they are lifted up inbetween use, someone messes with them and they drop on someones head that is!

Not cynical, just pointing out that accidents are more likely to happen with diy types rather than properly manufactured systems.

I think there may have been, or is going to be, a program about Burnley entitled 'Burnley are Back' on BBC this week. Appparently there is also a second one planned for the 9th May.......

Lee, we have the " manufactured" types and " home made", and IMO there is more chance of injury from the " proper" ones.

They are designed to be lifted out of the way as you know when not in use, the home made ones we built have no way of being attached to the posts, so are either in situ or not - we dont remove our goals in between use, so once the net weight is down it stays down.

There is no chance of them being left dangling ( by the very inadequate strap and velcro system on offer ) so very little chance of them hitting someone - they are also lighter than the factory built ones.

Heavy net weights + velcro strap + lifted out of the way + a boys School = potential disaster!!

We cable tie ours up, we have found that the velcro isnt strong enough despite the back bars only being lightweight aluminium.

Neil, How did you make yours? any chance of a pic as we have the top spec euro goals and need to make the frame work to save pegging.

Can't really afford the £300 for the correct frame!

Avatar: Akrotiri 20 Aug 2009 by Neil Dixon

Richard , we just ordered sufficent lengths of some steel conduit ( diametre about 25mm) and elbow joints, cut the conduit to length, fixed the elbow joins in place and away you go.

You have the option to fill the conduit with a material to make them heavier, but we just peg them down in the corners and 1 centrally.

Cant remember the cost, but much cheaper than the purpose made type.

No pics i am afraid as they are stored away until January!!
