Message Board - Bowls: Cutting Green

Can someone please explain what double cutting is and how you do it.
Our greenkeeper wants to cut the green all one way so the nap is laying one way for our open day, is this right?

Double cutting can mean several things. In the main, it means cutting the same area twice. You can double cut by returning along your first cut, going over your first cut again in the same direction (which I don't recommend), or cutting across your initial cut.

You mention that your 'greenkeeper' wants it cutting one way - I assume you mean your 'head' greenkeeper? If it is your head greenkeeper's decision, then it's his call, be it 'right' or 'wrong'.

Is it right? To me, it's a matter of personal choice. Personally, I like to see a nice striped green, others may not.

We often double cut before big comps, it is commonly used by many. Reason, usually to try and speed the green up a little.

Oops, just realised you are looking after a bowling green, not a golf course. Anyway, same thing applies.
