Any recommendations as to which type of soil sampler is best? Want it also for taking cores when carrying out watering.

Take a look no further than the Pitchcare shop, they have the best which is used by ECB Pitch Inspectors, the 'Impact 2' soil sampler.

If you're wanting to take lots of cores then you want the small diddy thing made by stri Nz. I've never seen it for sale anywhere else.
Perhaps Dan would like to get a batch load in - I reckon most groundsmen would like one.

You also want one of the 2" samplers in your cupboard for when it's needed.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
