Message Board - Football: Huck goal socket covers
3 Sep 2009 by AB
Hi all,
We bought and put up a lovely set of aluminium Huck goals last year, including setting in the ground sockets.
All good until it was time to swap back to rugby and we have no socket covers to put over the holes left in the ground.
Huck say that they don't do any (which is crazy) and as the sockets are oval in shape it isn't as easy as just using a standard cap end that we use for rugby and used to use for the old football sockets.
Has anyone got any ideas as to where to go with this one?
Regards
Andy.

Hi Andy,
Can you give me the internal dimensions of the length and width of the socket, we may be able to help you.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave, I will double check, but I think it is 110mm by 100mm if this sounds familiar.

Hi Andy,
We've been asking the other manufacturers, but they don't do an off the shelf size that fits all. For instance Harrod UK make lids but they only fit their own goal sockets.
What I have done in the past is cut some marine ply to be wider than the rim and knocked a lump of 3" x 2" timber into it to go down the socket. These usually hold in place just fine.
The team are still trying to source something for you though.
Cheers,
Dave

Sorry to butt in but this shows a gap in the market for multi use sport grounds such as schools surely when company manufacture goals it is sensible to make caps that fit there sockets. Its something i hope to drive for when we start our school groundsman association. WD
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!

I don't know why Huck don't make socket covers!!!
The other manufacturers do. We have sourced the right caps for people in the past, but only when the sockets were the correct sizes.
Most people usually stuff the holes with old fertiliser bags and then top up with a bit of soil/sand over the summer months.
Lids are ok, but the kids, particularly on school grounds and parks, pull them out and they get lost.
These lids aren't cheap to keep replacing.

i have found the lids of some whitening containers fit some sockets perfectly, cheap to replace and soft (er) than the metal socket caps.
Or, make your own out of wood, a jigsaw, old round fence post ( as long as not too tight a fit) and a few screws, and as dave says cover with soil.

Find a plastic drinks bottle that fits and ram it down the socket, leave as much of the bottle intact as you can so that it doesnt become pushed down out of reach - has the added advantage that noone wants to pull up an old drinks bottle

100 mm OD pipe with a cap welded on top, cut a slot in the top like a money box. this would allow a net peg or such like to enter the top and lift it out. Also you would only have a 5mm gap on 2 sides. Alternitivly a local blacksmith or small engineering company could make these up for you to what ever specs you wanted.
