Message Board - Cricket: Vandalism (Cars on Outfield and Square)

telegramme boy 2.JPG 13 Sep 2009 by Chris Thornton Last edited 13 Sep 2009

There are 3 finals taking place today on our ground ( Midweek League) so was due to go in at 0900 to tidy up and roll a couple of tracks.
Phone call from the Chairman at 0840 "Brace yourself there have been a couple of cars driven over the outfield and square".
Needless to say I am very angry about this sort of behaviour but when I get to the ground it transpires that it was a FIRST TEAMER and a friend who had gone to the ground after a night on the booze to find that the car park was locked so thought they would have some fun meanwhile.
The police were alerted by the cleaner and they admitted it ,were breathalysed, over but under, later at the station.
They will get a fine of 80 quid or so, which the local council gets to keep, I am told.
Needless to say as folk turn up to the ground everybody gets equally as angry as me.

The outfield will repair itself and the square is to be renovated next week.
The player is a bit of a Nomad and plays wherever he can for whatever reason but I would not expect him to play for us again.
The ignorance beggars belief and I am still shocked but should I be???

You sound like a very kind chap Chris, I have that guy marked down as a bit more than a Nomad.

I had a father and son use my bunker bankings for motorbike jumps straight onto a green, if thats what the parents are like then we have little or no hope with the kids.

It seems from what i read in the papers, see on the television , and have personally experienced that there is a hard core of people who have little respect for other people and their property. This situation has been getting worse over the years, now it seems people are able to behave in a anti-social manner and think it is normal ,without fear of consequences.
Not Shocked Chris but sad.
Political correctness gone mad.

Chris,
Does your club's constitution have a fines clause for misdemeanours? If so, get the club to slap a signifcantly hefty fine on these guys.
Most reputable leagues will not allow players to sign up for new clubs until their dues to their previous clubs have been paid off.

never mind fines etc...i would personally go out of my way to make sure the little b*****d doesnt play cricket or any sport on turf in the district again...i would make his actions public knowledge for all to see what a complete tosser he is...

Lots of emotions at the moment and I am going to let the dust settle ( renovations imminent and lots to think about) and then ask the committee to take some sort of action against this player. (The other one was just a ,non cricket playing , friend.)
This is a man who's, cricketing, services would be a bonus to any Northern Premier League team. He will have
payed his subs and as the season has ended he will feel ,once again a free agent, to go wherever he feels like playing.
Everyone is flabbergasted that a first team player could have such disregard for the club and it's outfield. This is the type of behaviour we have come to expect as normal from some people these days but one of your own???!!
Of course he isn't one of our own. He is a "bit of a mercenary" ( someone else's description of him )where cricket is concerned so will go to , dare I say it, the highest bidder. You all know what I mean.
I am going to ask the committee to ask the N P L management committee to ban him from playing in this league next season. Whether our lot will want to do this or the N P L will want to do this remains to be seen but that's how I feel.
The club could also sue him!! Oh yea. lol.
I feel violated and I am not being melodramatic, because at the time of the incident they were not drunk! For a cricketer to do this, sober, beggars belief. To spend a few minutes on a lovely sunny Sunday morning 2 hours before 6 local teams are due to have a good day's cricket, driving two high powered sports cars across a cricket ground is ignorant and he should not be welcome at any club next season.
Had we had a wet week those games would not have gone ahead. As it was the Kaloam had dried out and withstood the cars and the heavy roller was used and all three games were played on one pitch.
We shall see what happens.

We've had the first team p*ssing on the square, pitch, covers, sticking steel road pins in the pitch, riding mountain bikes over the sqaure you name it after drinks benders. No action has been taken, other than warning me of my conduct for losing my rag. My opinion is they don't respect our profession, thinking we're all doing this because we are too thick to do anything else. Time our industry was given more respect, and taken seriously I say !!

It's unbelievable that a cricketer would do something like this - yes, after a few beers people do daft things, but cricketers shouldn't do things like that sober.
I doubt I would have got chance to whack 'em at our place - likely someone would have beaten me to it.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

i agree paul the worse situation i had at work was after the master in charge of cricket son's wedding on our ground broken glass everywhere on the square cars parked on the wickets and he thought giving me a fiver would smooth things over . Wd

Chris,

Emotions a side, this is a very simple case of wilful damage of club property.

1) Internal Disciplinary Hearing.
2) Substantial Fine (to fund renovation work).
3) Unable to represent club again until the fine is payed, and under county board regulations anyone else until any outstanding monies are payed to existing club.

Even if your club is not willing to press charges, you may find that the league take a different view to vandalism by a playing member and the person in question could have to answer to the m

It is unfortunate that this kind of behaviour is becoming more and more regular, just be thankful that it has come at the end of the season.

Geez Paul
You need to get another club mate, your committee is a joke!
These people are not cricketers, they are just ar***ole chavs.

Im on holiday for a week as from tommorrow and have had to get someone to give the weekends track a cut and a roll. My president was the first one to come forward for a lesson today, he is an out an out cricketer and cricket lover, I am lucky I think.

BJ,
My point entirely. Use league rules to stop the guy playing again - anywhere. And having slapped the hefty fine on him, alert your county leagues to ensure other clubs know WHO he is and WHAT he did.
