Avatar: Dhekelia 15 Sep 2009 by britboy

hi peeps, about to use graden on square and wondered what and how many directions other people do on theirs. Also ,what depth do you go to-i have not got much of a thatch problem but am trying to improve bounce/carry-have about 50mm kaloam sitting on top of mendip and various loams etc from last 100 years efforts so have a problem with the different drying rates of the two types of soil causing cracking if too dry but not enough bounce if too damp-been a sod to get right these last three joke summers.

"-i have not got much of a thatch problem".

How much of a thatch problem do you NOT have?

In the first instance, take a profile sample from the square and determine what depth of thatch is present. Only then can you assess to what depth and how many passes will suffice.

Whatever the discovered depth, the scarifier should be set to below that level, always assuming of course that it is within the operating parameters of your chosen machine.

I'll let others comment upon shrinkage, incompatability, the possibility of root breaks etc.

I know no boundaries.

Mario is quite right by saying you must take a core sample to assess the depth of thatch/fibre.
I would then use the Graden to this depth plus an extra 1mm in three directions as the surface tends to disintegrate after that. Clean out the grooves created by the Graden with power brush/blowers and hey presto you are left with loads of lovely lines for your seed to sit in.
