Message Board - Machinery: toro or John Deere
15 Sep 2009 by will 7
I am looking to buy a new rough / semi mower and am looking at the toro groundmaster 4000d and the john deere wam t1600 series2. has anybody had any expierence or problems with either machine. We have had both in on demo and both preformed equally as good as each other. the only problem is the price of the toro is about £7000 more than the john deere. how do i justify the extra cost for a bit more quality. Also dont toro spare parts cost more than john deere ones?
any help much appreciated
cheers

Both good machines. The JD is more up to-date technology, most comfortable operators platform which is significant when you are on-board for long periods, and more productive.
You don't get any more quality for your 7k so I'm sure you can put that to better use.
Can't comment on parts prices, but can say the JD back-up is better.

Hi James,
This year we replaced 3 Toro 4000’s, born in 2002, they were equipped with standard decks and blades initially and later the blades were replaced with the “Atomic” blades. Another machine was replaced last year, same age and similar hours. Two others were purchased in 2005 because of their superior productivity compared to other machines in the Toro range of rotary mowers. The repair and maintenance costs of all six machines have been negligible.
The new generation of 4000 comes equipped with a hydraulically powered fan that is reversible to blow debris from the air intake screen, this is automatic and temperature controlled or can be selected by the operator. Of our fleet of six, four of them have this facility; I specified mulching decks and atomic blades on these four machines and the clippings dispersal and after cut appearance are superb. Agreed the machine is expensive but the running costs reflect the quality of the machine.
If you would like any other information regarding the 4000 please E mail me calcallaby@btopenworld.com

I must say I agree with all of the comments regarding the 4000D. It is a very good machine. Most of my stuff is John Deere but the 4000D is far superior to the JD version. Quieter and more user friendly and a far better cut.
