Message Board - Natural Turf: Good results...............................

22 Sep 2009 by Mark Jones

In March this year, i took on the role of volunteer groundsman at my local football club. When i took over the pitch was terrible and had been living a slow death through 5 years of no basic maintanance.

The pitch has now improved immensely after ultilising a small new budget. I think one of the biggest results was the weeds. As you can see below the pictures show the weeds in march. and looking at pitch now you would struggle to find a single weed! Just to say Greenor was used and they were sprayed April, then again end of August. The pitch was vertidrained, overseeded, fertilised in May. And will be vertidrained again soon before wet weather.

For me it has been a learning curve as i had only done gardening work in the past. Therefore finding pitchcare forum was a god send! I have learnt much from people on here. So i thanks everyone on here. Also visiting local groundsmen gave me contacts and advice.

Hi Mark, im also involved in local football in Cornwall but even less experienced than you. Was wondering how much your vertidraining cost you? Also, would there be any point in doing it at this stage in the season or better to wait until next spring?
