Message Board - Machinery: Ransomes Marquis 20 (possibly available)
19 Oct 2009 by mickjm
Hello
I have recently acquired (and not off the back of a lorry) A Ransomes Marquis 20 complete with roller ride behind seat. Its got a Honda engine.
The engine works fine. I'm having it fully serviced c/w new cables and controls where necessary. A new blade and bottom blade too. Collecting box is plastic and mint.
Does anyone want to buy one? I've no idea as yet of its value but I can't give it away(sorry).
Suffice it to say it'll be running like new so could be a bargain for a bowling club or cricket club.
I thought I'd offer it up on here first before e-bay was used since there are probably more 'users' on here.
When I get it back I'll chuck up a photo or two.
I'll chuck itinto the machinery sales section too once I've got photos.

Not yet Richard. I've left it with the engineers and haven't been down there in the last couple of weeks. They did say it'll be a while since they're very busy . If I get a chance I'll get down there b4 the weekend and load them on here.

A Heinz 57"Bitser" of a machine Mick...?
Handle(s), front rollers and some sort of front bracket contraption all from the scrap parts bin I'd say.
Engine is an old model GX140 too.
A case of 'Needs must' somewhere in it's history probably.

Haven't a clue. I know the previous owner loved a tinker but I don't use these machines so haven't a clue as to its history or whats original. It hasn't been used for 4 years according to the guy who passed it on to me. It has the original manufacturers plate on it and the engine looks relatively new/unused on the machine. However which way, its in good order and people could do worse!!
........Heinz 57 "bitser", LOL classic. Its a Ransomes Marquis 20" cylinder mower with slight alterations which appear not to affect its running. Hows that???
If you've any more info Sumo about it that you can gleen from the photos please post on here.

Well, it's a 4a so it's a pretty old chassis.
The plastic grass box you refer to and that front bracket (which appears, in pic 2, to curve upwards) tends to suggest Atco as do the front rollers. Marquis front wooden rolers were all equal length.
The handle could be off a Hayter (Harrierette?) but equally could be off a warehouse or horticultural nursery-type trolley ?
The gearing is wrong for this engine which is 'old' and is sited too far to the right judging by the amount of shaft visible. The chassis imbalance will be leaning to the right and may affect aftercut appearance depending on surface being mown.
The clutch drum needs to be moved along it's shaft, closer to the flywheel .

Ps. Note that you haven't put it in the Machinery For Sale section (Cost £30 + VAT for items over £500) so I trust you have made a contribution to PC for all this 'free' exposure.

I may have some new rollers from a Marquis 51, these are of un-equal length but will do the job. I may also have some other bits and pieces that could be of some use in restoring this machine to working order and add further to it's "bitza" appearance.
I'll have a look on Monday.
You can mail me on calcallaby@btopenworld.com or pm.

As soon as I know its running correctly(serviced/fixed) and I'm happy to sell it on, I'll put it in the machinery for sale section.
I'd rather be sure its 'sell-able' before advertising it and quite honestly the extra info is helpful in that I don't want to mis-sell it either.
Thanks Sumo.
The rollers are in good order according to those that are in atendance to it but if I need anything I'll give you a shout calcallaby. Many thanks.

Further to the kind gentleman's email above, I would be very grateful for some help in also valuing a Ransoms Marquis 20" which belongs to my mother-in-law. She is having to downsize and I have been tasked with trying to sell her machinery which includes the Marquis, a Wheel Horse - Raider 10 sit on and Honda 5.5 Sovereign Self Propelled mower. Not coming from the industry I know very little about values so any help would be appreciated. The Marquis has not run for many years but appears in sounds condition and is not seized as it will turn over. The Wheel Horse runs (apart from flat battery at present) and teh Honda has not run for about 2 years. We have been offered £150 as a trade in against a £700 push Hayter which seems low for what is a great collection of machinery. There are also 2 trailers for the tractor. If anyone can help with regards to what these are worth and where best to sell or if the offer made is reasonable, I would be very grateful. I have attached a picture of the Marquis.
