Message Board - Pests, Weeds and Diseases: Weed Control

30 Oct 2009 by Mozz Last edited 30 Oct 2009

I know it needs doing in late spring next year, but we are planning to attempt to try to deal with the weeds in our outfield in advance of next season - they are quite widespread!

How would people best recommend doing it - we don't have anybody qualified to spray pesticides. We are looking for a combination of convenient and cheap!

Thanks in advance

Geordie,

Look up complete weed control, there is a link just to the left of this message, they should have someone in your area.

Geordie,
Don't do it in advance - do it in season. Mid to late May, when the weeds are growing and receptive of the herbicide.
We paid a contractor a little over £50/acre to do our field. In truth we'd struggle to do it cheaper ourselves as the contractor had access to bulk chemicals. He also had all the licences and the right kit.
Only thing it didn't kill was a form of speadwell (which you have to search for to find).

There are many other alternative contractors available.

Consider applying a standard selective herbicide containing MCPA, Dicamba and Mecoprop. if slender speedwells are a problem, then you will need a product called spearhead but very expensive

Check your contractors credentials before you use them
