Message Board - Machinery: Leaf collection
8 Nov 2009 by tony normile
Is there a machine available which will be as effective on turf as on tarmac? I was thinking of buying a Husqvarna Collector but this would probably mean buying a new tractor to tow it (the tarmac is a long steep drive) as I doubt that my little Haytor would cope with it.
As a total alternative, what about a heavy duty back pack blower? I have a small Ryobi but it can't cope with wet / compressed leaves.
As always, any advice would be much appreciated.

Using a Trillo SG 100 at the moment it is on Hire from Balmers (Burnley Lancs) I have reduced after one weeeks use, around five week hand balling and blowing, down too less than two weeks started last monday will be finished Thursday this excellent in both wet and dry conditions. Worth a look at their web page
Why not see if this is suitable
best of luck

We use a Trillo too but I'm not sure of the model number.
Our's is an all singing and dancing job that not only collects leaves off turf and roads but it does a brilliant job, in another configuration, of scarification. I understand it was pretty expensive but seems to be well worth it so far.
I'll collect some more info for tomorrow, so if you need it just come back on here.
Presentation is the name of the game.

We have a trilo sg400 have done for 4 years now. Its a big machine that is used for large areas. This time of the year we are picking up 30 - 40 m3 of leaves a week with it. Its does a good job.

i use an Echo PB 650 backpack blower to clear all the corners etc then i use my Amazone Groundkeeper to "hoover" up...because of the flail/paddle configuration it has enough draft to suck up erything off the roadways...

Many thanks Sipho, Anti FA, and ticky 21. I think that with my limited budget and the small area (less than 1 acre) to work, the best answer so far is a Billygoat pedestrian collector.
Anyone know where I can get a secondhand one, or buy one at an auction, preferably in the south, south east or south west?

If buying second hand , ensure that the bag or the wander hose is in good condition as you will find it to be several hundred pounds to change them .
But a great machine .

We use our Johnson Roadsweeper to tidy up our running track.
The Billy goat would take you forever to clean the track with and I feel that you need a brush to agetate the leaves and grass clippings that get blown onto the surface.
As the surface is a bit rough the grass tends to stick like mad.
We have also been know to use our trilo to sweep it and has worked.
Have you had a look at the kersten type sweeper?
The only real way to test is to have demo's of the various types of machines.

Wicketdevil......i must concur with Sipho on this one.....do a bit of homework into various machines....i would strongly recmmend kersten machines.....they do a wide variety of brushes, blowers collectors etc.....the UK Importer for Kersten is Chris Faulkner, he runs out of Reading, and is a really helpful obliging guy... just click on the Kersten ad on here....

wicketdevil,
i use a D W Tomlin mech brush that couples up to my compact tractor. this does a great job of picking up the leaves off of my running track. in field and tarmac surrounds. it even gets the sand up from around the jump pits. it also does a great job of cleaning the track as well just after it has rained (surface only, no replacement for a deep clean) i can do the whole track in about an hour.
im now an ex groundsman but hey old habits die hard
