Message Board - Cricket: Weston Square

8 Nov 2009 by EDDIE G

Hi Jon
I was down at the carnival over the weekend and while my wife went shoping in Weston I called into see your square. It looks well. What did you have done as You said you had problems with a contractor last year.
Regards Eddie.

Hi Eddie.
The problem we had with the contractor was a couple of years back - wasn't really the contractors' fault (imho) but rather the time of year and lack of management from within the club.

This year I had Gordon (Bath) in to hollow tine then scarify (Graden), seed & top dress. Have to say I'm well pleased with how it's come on.
The practice square and 2nd ground square were done in house. They're about 2 to 3 weeks behind the main square but are also coming on nicely now.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

JL - pardon my ignorance, but was there a particular reason why you chose to hollow tine your square?

Mike,

Jon has a construction break somewhere between approx 85mm and 100mm. He wanted to have the square drilled so that soil from topdressing could possibly infiltrate the base, helping to peg it together. It would also allow roots to penetrate deep into the base soil, again helping to hold it all together. At the last minute the funding i believe was withdrawn with only enough being available to hollow core.
This i did, but i only just penetrated into the base soil, so whether it will be enough to start the pegging process we will have to wait and see. I have advised that we do the same again next year, with i hope slightly longer tines.

Mike, As Bath says the idea is to try to pin two incompatible soils together.
I didn't believe that roots alone would be enough to hold the break together so I wanted to get some loam down holes to try and join the two.
We managed to get into the lower soil about an inch which may or may not be enough - we'll find out next season.
The biggest challenge was getting enough water into the surface to allow the tines to penetrate fully.

With solid tining throughout the winter and the filled hollow holes I'm hopeful that the break may pin together.
I'm aiming to have the same done again next year but will give a bit more thought as to ways of getting more water into the profile.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
