Hi I'm new to the site, although I have read the site since April. I'm keen to get a white picket fence for our ground but am struggling to find any suppliers online. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, I maintain a couple of rugby pitches during the winter. l In order to get the lines marked in, I use total weedkiller but the trouble is when I use the white line marker (it looks like one below) it doesn't mark on the soil very well.
Silly question, but be kind because it's my first year! I want to know if it's possible to brown the grass without killing it? The white chalk will go onto the grass easier than bare ground.

For presentational qualities as well as player safety i always recommend to various clubs never to burn lines in, it causes rutting which can be a hazzard and promotes weed growth during the close season, the marker you have works well on grassbut when the soil is exposed it struggles to transfer because you tend to find the soil collects on the transfer wheel and blocks up the small transfer wheel, you ideally need a scraper etc fitting to keep the wheels clean, unlessyou have a very strong coverage of grass year round you could do with a marker with a rear transfer wheel as these normally come fitted with a scrapper of some kind. For your picket fence try your local timber merchant or fencing supply company they may do you a deal but you normally will have to assemble.

We have UPVC white fencing arouund our ground now and it looks fantastic and will not rot like like wood but it aint cheap!
Whats your budget for the fencing?

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

Hi Sunlover, (me too!)
I have quite a lot of spare white picket fencing at my ground in reasonable nick. I'm in North Essex.

Sunlover,

For initial marking use either Preline or Finale

Finale

I tried preline and it killed the grass dead, contrary to what it says. Best is to use a good quality paint via a spray marker. I have a TXE its brill.

as a previous thread, i must agree with Mickey...a decent quality paint thru a decent spray machine when the grass leaf is dry, will ensure a bright line lasting for nearly 3 weeks....i must re-iterate i hate "burning in" in this day and age of line fliud there is no need for this dodgy practice, we are supposed to be clued up groundsmen voluntary or proffesional....this burning in come from the old DLO council days whe they would go and mark out the local park once in a blue moon but couldnt be bothered to re measure the lines out...so neede to keep them in by any means....ive even heard stories of creosote being used in marking trolleys...
