Message Board - Machinery: Westwood Mower

Hi
I have chance of an old Westwood Mower if I can manage to get it running, it has a Briggs and Stratton Twin 14HP OHV engine in it.
The machine has not run for 2 years but was ok when last used, had a try with it today changed the battery for a good one but when the ignition is switched on it clicks when the key is turned into start position there is nothing, I have turned the fan/flywheel on top of the engine which suggests its not siezed up, and followed the start procedure from the body plate but wonder if there is any other safety feature to get past, dont know if it has starter motor or other device celanoid??
It will only be used for perimeters which are not too big.

Any assistance will be helpfull
Paul

changed the battery for a good one?

Try a fully charged one, sounds flat.

If its so flat why does it start 2 other triples which are both diesels and take a bit more kicking over??

I have one of these, and you have to take off starter motor, take apart and clean.

Then it should go.. well here's hoping.

The battery is clearly ok.

The first 'click' is the anti-afterfire solenoid actuating on the carburettor.

That there is no louder click when you turn the key to 'Start' indicates either the main starter solenoid is faulty or the safety interlock circuit is preventing 'Start'.

Check the seat switch (if fitted), the brake/clutch switch on the pedal and the mower engagement switch on the lever.

Check all that before performing open-heart surgery on the starter motor.

Edit: As it has stood for some time also check the terminals on the back of the ignition switch. The live one is prone to corrosion.

Paul/Sumo
Thanks for response

I need to report back on this one Sumo I will go through the checklist before dismantling anything but first need to try again as nobody was sat on the mower when trying it, it didnt look inviting with 2 years worth of barn dust on it, sorry should have known as my triple has seat switch on.

Cheers

Sorry, with the OHV engine you probably have an electric PTO switch for the blades rather than a lever. The safety interlock circuit goes through this PTO switch as well. Yellow wires iirc.

Do you need to depress the clutch/brake pedal on these older mowers ?
We do on our Countax and that must be at least ten years old now.

Yes you do bath,
The mower is running now it has got a switch under the seat, it belongs to a mate who said i could have it until i told him to look on e bay at the prices there bringing, now im having it on loan and maintaining it and he can come and get it if he needs it, fair enough by me will save my legs and only maybe someone else may cut the corners.
Thanks guys
