Message Board - Machinery: Recoil Spring

23 Nov 2009 by villager

My Recoil was poor on my Ransome marquis mower, so decided to shorten rope unfortunelty when dismantling the Recoil the spring has ended up unwinding!, spent an hour or so trying to back together but to no avail.
Any tips?

Start from the outside and work your way around using your thumbs to hold the spring coils in position as you go.
Oil the spring after you get it all wound in place.

PS
Since you have it all apart now - Fit a new rope of the proper full length.

I'm a bity heavy handed but will have another go this morning, sorted rope out to a better length but it's just this damn spring.
Anyway of keeping the spring in place?, ties? or is it just purely by use of hands?.

It is just one of those things you learn with practice. Follow Sumo's instructions and you will get there. Might be worth wearing eye protection as whilst you are learning as the spring has a nasty tendancy to leap out at you when you least expect it.

Villager, are you trying to wind it under tension? if you are don't bother you will never get it back into place this way. Place the spring into the top of the recoil body and place the pulley on top, replace the screw/retaining bolt and then (This is difficult to explain without showing you or any picture) Pull the rope from between the pulley and the casing where it exits the casing and so you have plenty of slack and using the rope wind the coil in theopposite direction to te coil spring. When you feel you have wound enough tension back into it then you can realease the rpe back into place. Note that in some cases you may have to cut a small nick into the pulley to achieve this though some manufacturers have a small nick in the side of the pulley wall as part of the manufacture process. Sum I don't supose you have any pics you can post to show this? if not I can sort some out later this week.

just found this that should save me pulling apart a mower to take some photos. This shows the basic technique for replacing a broken rope pull and though for a honda the componants are relatively similar.

if this isn't what you need, dont let things get you down and keep asking questions if you are unsure, done let it get to this.

Cheers Mal
strangely enough iv'e already looked at this.
i havent tried been winding it under tension. basically iv'e got a wicket mower that when pulled to start the rope struggles to wind back in quickly enough. So i dismantled it adjusted the length of rope then wanted to oil the spring and it flys out.
How do i get a picture on here?.
