We have a H&S inspection early in the new year. Risk Assessments are required for all tools and machinery. We have none in place. Is it a case of sitting down on a frosty day and writing a list? If so, what needs to be on it? Or is there a cheat? Do the manufacturers have these details? If so where? Any help gratefully received as there really is ice to salt.

Hi Vic - I was in the same boat as we have a school inspection in Jan. As we had no risk assessments in place, I had to write new ones for every machine, across both sites - getting on for 50 of them in total. It has taken a huge amount of time starting from scratch, so I know what sort of task you have on your hands. Much of it is simply transferring information from the operators manual and cross referencing it with local site conditions.

See how you go with Ian's template's, or if you need any more, let me know and i'll send mine over to you. If you need a short term measure, I have generic ones for each machine, and i'd imagine much of our machinery is similar in nature, so you could use them with some minor adjustments here and there.

One thing that I would add, that many people forget is to make sure that you have them dated, and also mark review dates as and when - if the risk assessment isn't dated, it isn't valid.

Mike
