Message Board - Golf: Standing water on the greens!"
30 Dec 2009 by Dave the Greenkeeper
Are greens have been frozen soild now for eight days and the the air temp has risen and the rain has started so the water is sat on the surface, the forecast is for hard frosts over new year. Would it be best to remove the standing water from the greens before it freezes? or would i be doing more damage in doing so?
Thanks, Dave

I would suggest you leave well alone!
If the leaf blade is frozen, the cells within are brittle and will break, thus weakening the plant and giving entry sites to disease pathogens once the thaw comes.
If the surface has thawed but frozen beneath, then root shearing can occur.
The plant can survive in a frozen state for weeks, since it becomes dormant.
