Message Board - Health & Safety: ROPS on mowers
4 Jan 2010 by Martin Chester
Anyone know the LAW on ROPS on triples/front mowers? The firm I used to work for understood that from 2010 it was a legal requirement to have one fitted, and fitted them to all their mowers from 2009.
However, the firm I'm at now don't seem to know anything about it.
What's the legal position? Is it law from 2010 for all mowers to have ROPS fitted?

if they are not factory fitted, then they are OK....if they ARE fitted then they must be up at all times, except in limited height situations, ( ie under trees)....to date. there is no law stating machines must be fitted with one,

The only greens mowers that come with a rollover bar is the John Deere. We have been told that we can remove them as thay are for the American market and not compulsory in the UK. Fitted they are a serious hazard for knocking ones self out whilst emptying the rear grass box! They also tangle up in low branches bringing debris raining down on to the operator.

I have also been led to believe that weight of the machine also has a bearing, if under a certain weight then no rops is needed.

It also depends on operational capacities, for example the Toro 3150 triplex here in the US does not have a rops however the 3wd one has as its designed to travel on greater slopes etc.
The Deere 2500 rops is designed to stop the machine rolling over, hence why it looks 'half' height. All machines with full rops have to have seat belts to keep the operator inside the protected area.

Thanks. Ours are 06 Ransomes parkways that are used for a council contract. They were bought without them fitted, and there's hardly any use for them anyway. I've yet to see one of the other firm's bars up anyway!

From the 1st January 2010 is it the law ROPS have to be fitted to Triple mowers.

Thanks calcallaby. I presume you've found that in the press releases bit, which isn't working for me right now! Do you have a link that I can check? Thanks.

No Martin I didn't find it press releases, a friend from Lely UK mentioned it in passing yesterday while we were in a meeting.

Calcallaby,
you're right, it is going to happen.
I have a meeting shortly in regards to this, and guess what?
The end user will have to pay even more for the machine if purchased in 2010 due to this additional fancy frame!!!!

Is this for new machines bought this year, or do existing machines have to have them fitted now as well ?
14 Jan 2010 by SOS
It will be for machines bought this year from what I have heard.
In regards to older models bought I would expect not, but this is going to open yet another can of worms in the world of risk assessments and our beloved HaS files.

I did wonder if that was the only enforceable way of doing it, i.e. fitting them as standard to all models bought this year. But it does seem a bit pointless, either they all need them so much for safety grounds that all must have them, or they don't and therefore it should be upto the user/buyer to decide.

It has to start somewhere Martin, look at the way seat belts were introduced for instance, if you own a car that is of a certain vintage and has no seat belts then of course they do not have to be worn because they do not exist.
15 Jan 2010 by chrismitchell
Speaking of seat belts. How many out there wear them on mowers fitted with them. When ROPS are fitted so are seat belts. Can you really see a greenkeeper mowing greens first thing in the morning clipping and unclipping a seat belt every time he gets off the machine to move the pin in or out?

Good Morning Chris,
I suspect very few wear seat belts, can you imagine clipping and unclipping them while mowing tees, what a pain. Bad enough mowing faiways with only the restriction of movement to contend with.
Are you going to Harrogate?
15 Jan 2010 by chrismitchell
Afraid I'm not off up there this year. Too much going on here along with the weather to contend with. It would be fun to go along just to watch the 2mm poa brigade slug it out with the fescue bent brigade. After a few beers it could get very messy!

lol. Think you might be right there, must keep my eyes open in Weatherspoons.
Shame you won't be there, I could buy you a beer, another time perhaps.
