but seriously, you`re right. haven`t seen my square for well over a month!

12 Jan 2010 by Grassman2011

Sorry to put a dampner on this, but, one nice mild sunny day and most places will be flooded.
More snow tonight, then mild by Saturday with heavy rain.
Will hibernate for another month.

Yes, just get on with helping with the housework, DIY, paperwork etc and earn the brownie points for when you disappear for days on end only returning to go to bed !!!

Kitchen is half stripped of paper, new cooker arrives on Thurs, DVD cabinet for lounge has a pile of wood waiting for it and needs finishing. Got plenty to do at the moment without a thaw thanks.
Once the thaw comes I dread to think what the outfields are going to look like.
Due to bonfire night (and the ban from the cleaners on cutting the outfields) being cancelled and the re-run, neither outfield has been cut since last week of October. It'll take me a month to get just the outfields back under control - somehow I'll need to fit some rolling in somewhere as well.
At least the squares looked bloody good before they got covered. Fingers crossed I've not missed any fuss before the snow this time - looked kinda stupid with that one last year :( hey hum. It does go to show how little players actually know about what we do, they never even realised there was a disease there until I showed them - even to me it stood out many a mile.

Bath, all we've had is sleet for the past hour. If it keeps up like this my grounds will be clear of snow by the morning - at least the kids will have to be back in school :)

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

12 Jan 2010 by Grassman2011

We have had about half an inch here jon and still snowing nicely.
Mine still had a good covering today but a thaw had set in. Could be all clear come Saturday, the heavy rain due will wash it all away. Could be very interesting. Snow thawing, heavy rain and the ground could still be frozen. Where is all that water going to go ?

Saltire.gif 12 Jan 2010 by mario

Listen guys - just shut the **** up about attempting to get out there and get some work done.

Go on fookin' holiday why don't you!

Let the ground/square/outfield recover in it's own time.

Here hendeth the lesson..................

I know no boundaries.

Another inch and a half last night here and its still snowing'ish. Pity realy as it was thawing nicely it was just starting to dawn on me that there realy was some grass out there somewhere.

I suppose in the end it'll be all white on the night

Hey Mal,

Cleared the hard courts last 2 days, couple of your members helped out for a while and of course they are snowed under again, courts that is. Oh well.

Vic.

COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER MY SELF KEN. LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU COME OUT OF HIBERNATION MATE.

13 Jan 2010 by Minormorris64

I was told by someone who lives by our ground that there was a 2 foot drift on the lane to the ground, then we have had another 2 inches overnight and its been blowing nicely.
I doubt very much that any machinery will be touching our ground much before March as per normal round here, no doubt roller will be hitting the square in early April as per the last 5 years.

You're correct Mario.
There is nobody more anxious to get out there than me. But circumstances are beyond our control so I have to control myself instead and find other things to do like decorating, which starts next week and reading.
The snow has all but gone but the outfield is frozen solid so the heavy rain, which is forecast for weekend, will sit on top for weeks on end
Still, it doesn't stop us dreaming does it!

I am currently looking out over the ground to a square which I haven't seen since the 17th of December.

Still no point in going down as it's sopping wet now!

Ah well what will it be this lunchtime? Loose Women??

I know no boundaries.

13 Jan 2010 by barry glynn

I could do with a loose woman as well

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

13 Jan 2010 by Grassman2011

About to retire to loose woman myself Ken. Mine back to approx 100mm under again. Sounds as if it will be soaking again by the weekend.
Is this not an excuse for you and i to meet up next week Ken, around your family committments of course ?

Down here in sussex the snow is nearly gone (where I am on the coast at least). After 10 days under the snow the grass is as green as ever!! and the sun is just coming out as are my frown lines. Is it possible my outlook could turn to 'positive' in mid Jan!! People won't know me!!

14 Jan 2010 by barry glynn

Just going down to mine to have a look, havent seen any grass either for over a week.

Sorry to show my ignorance, but all the talk on this topic is from Summer Sports GM, which dont start to till when Winter Sports finish. Us poor lot are desperate to actually play and bring in some revenue. At least with a good covering of the white stuff on your squares it will stop the Canadian Geese from landing and destroying your squares.
We have got players having to go shopping on Saturdays instead of playing Rugby. Consider the poor supporters (not that many of them) who have been spending weekends at home doing all the correct things for her who should be obeyed, they are desperate!!! Theres even talk of putting the tely on on Saturday at the club in the hope that some of the Heineken Cup games will be shown. Some of the poor b***ers cant cope with the change to their routine, it must be costing them a fortune going to B & Q and having to buy things instead of partaking in a couple of lemonades as per usual during winter down at the local Rugby Club followed by rolling (sorry appearing) home ready for tea. Please feel sorry for all the supporters who are stuck at home!!!!!!!!

Getting back to the topic of the post "looking forward to the sun"
I remember on a odd and occasional mid February working outside in a t-shirt mowing my cricket square because it was so warm.
Thats just 4 weeks away

Mal
Would that be the odd February you worked in Tenerife

Avatar: Fruit Bat 14 Jan 2010 by Mal

Certainly not - I'm not a well travelled man to be honest - (It wasn't that long ago that I used to think going to Wales I would need to take my passport). But was a time when I used to work down in kent and then again about 4 years ago in Surrey

Mal make sure you have your passport ready for the border police when entering Yorkshire next week, there are quite a few looking forward to your thoughts during the week.

Excuse me, Mr Isherwood, if cricket had to wait for Winter Sports (a complete misnomer) to finish the season would be limited to late June before the all important pre-season friendlies kick in (soccer) At the current rate the 3rd and 4th XIs will be the domain of us geriatrics as the young 'uns are catching up on the re-arranged fixtures.
Incidentally, cricket isn't re-arranged for during the soccer season (apart from the odd cup final) so why should it happen in reverse?
As a former rugby man and referee, I look back longingly to the days when it was only played when there was an 'R' in the month, allowing a whole 4 months of uninterrupted cricket.

We are still hoping to have all our games finished by the end of Ap"R"il so we should be ok to release the young uns to the 11 a side game with little round red balls instead of the big yellow ones being used at the moment.
However that doesnt make my life any easier, we then start with Summer Rugby League and American Football. Fun marking out pitches for 2 different types of summer sport. Plenty of time for pitches to recover!!!.
Anyway i thought cricket was a summer sport, in that case it should be all over by the second week in June if last year was anything to go on.
Up north last year, June 13 dry days, July 5 dry days, August 13 dry days and then non stop rain untill along came the snow and frost.

Thanks for that Dave. I'm not so sure if I would be better off substituting my national county passport for my GOGGA membership card (Me thinks it will fast track me accross the border).
Not like the last time I tried to sneek into Yorkshire...................

Ok Phil, Ill excuse your ignorance.

Vid, mine still snow covered here in north Surrey but at least its more of an icy sort of stuff and not so deep. Reckon when it gets up a couple of more degrees we ll have a proper thaw.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.
