Message Board - Natural Turf: turfing on top of turf
21 Jan 2010 by digger74
hey guy's
ive just been told to do some re turfing, boss told me (just following instructions!!) to lay the new turf straight over the top of the old turf,he said dont worry about cutting the grass short before hand, just lay straight it over(approx 25mm long).
what problems am i to expect in the future???what are the chances of the turf rooting
also there is a new drainage system that has been put in place,i would assume now the water would have little chance of getting to it!!
all advice appreciated

Sounds like 2 options:
1. gather evidence explaining the folly and present it to your boss and his boss if there is one
2. try to get another job!
er - thinking about it, if you do 1. you may have to do 2. !!!

It's funny but I was talking to a local gardener about the same thing yesterday.
He has asked me to do some work on the lawns for one of his customers. They spent most of last year re-building their house with new a new swimming pool and decking. A large portion of the lawn had to be re-turfed and the new turf was laid straight on top of the old. When I asked if it was the builders who had done it he said no it was one of the green keepers from the local golf club !
You see it's not just Lawn Care that you get cowboys !
I seem Bath responding to a similar question a long while back. I think his advise was that if the old lawn was thatchy then you would be burying this thatch layer which could harbour funguses etc but also that the old turf could act as a sponge under the new and cause a squelching type affect.

I have seen worse, where a new lawn has been laid directly on top of a weed barrier/landscaping fabric which was laid directly on the existing lawn..!!
Needless to say it wasnt in a good state....!
