Message Board - Bowls: Larva after the ice
27 Jan 2010 by The postie
The ice has finally melted on the green i look after,i went to have a look at it today and have found loads of larva all over it.Dunno if you can tell from the pics what they are.I do spray for leatherjacks and i have never seen much more than a dozen in one season the three years i have been looking after the green.

It is very difficult to identify these grubs since the picture is a little too distant. I don't reckon they are beneficial to your turf.... that's for sure!
It could be that the ground was frozen quite deep and thawing occurred in the surface area, but could not drain, causing the grubs to come to the surface. What about some closer pictures? They just may be juvenile leather-jackets.
My advice would be to spray the green a.s.a.p!

ah but Ken, if you can't identify the grubs then what do you spray it with.
First job is to identify what they are. Try and get a close up picture of one - someone on here will be able to tell you what the critters are.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

My bet would be leather-jackets....... Come on Mr Postie, give us a close-up shot.
I couldn't be bothered to check the spelling last night..... nor can I tonight.....but Chlorphyfos would be my chemical of choice.
