Message Board - Bowls: short bowls

2 Feb 2010 by george hunter

hello
gentlemen
In the first place the bowling green i am maintaining is not square and the residents would like to play across the rink several times a week, which takes the rink away from many members as they cannot play the length and learn the play of the rink. this caused many problems last season and so i stopped them doing this, this season or so i thought. they call it short balls and say it is done on all rinks, maybe but they are square they would be no differrence which way you play. the excuse is many off there bowlers cannot do the length so need to play across any suggestions would be greatful.

To be frank if they cant do the length then they can no longer play the game!! Tough - I know. Any reduced length bowling will affect the run of the green. I would suggest that perhaps they can help this by playing a shortened game 'between' rinks at certain times during the week. As you are unable to turn the full rinks this may help keep the rinks more even and offers the opportunity of keeping a number of full lanes open.
