Message Board - Cricket: Seed For Square

2 Feb 2010 by paul kelsey

Knowing next to nothing about seed except planting it and praying that it grows ive got a 20k bag of Klean Cut which says Wicket/tennis the Varieties are

Conrad 1 (Lollum Perenne) 30%
Evita (Lollum Perenna) 20%
Legende (Festuca rubra) 40%
Highland (Agrostis Capillaris) 10%

Should this be suitable for renovations any advice welcome

Thanks Paul

You can use it paul and hope for the best. We would almost certainly never recommend using anything other than straight dwarf perrennial rye grass cultivars now.
50% of your mix is fecue and bent. They do not really like clay loam soils and they certainly do not last long under the rolling regime.
Conrad and Evita should be fine, but i really do question the other two.

Hi Paul

Yes I agree with Gordon, the problem with Bent and Fescue (especialy) is, they do not like to be subjected to heavy rolling, high densities, linear shrinkage/volume change etc as Fescue prefers an undisturbed, macropore structure, Just look at how Fescue struggles in most parkland golf courses, with soil push up greens, let alone a cricket wicket, when it is being manipulated, moulded, squashed, etc promoting high densities. It is the roots, that cannot cope with such harsh treatment so there will be a high turnover of organic matter (meaning squares will need turning over, relaying etc regular) and increased instability and cracking (remember the roots 'grow' with the shrinkage, and, allow plates to hold together as drying occurs.

Use Ryegrass only!

also, how old is your seed, anything past 12-18mths will be losing viability, in the past I have sown 2 year old rye grass into a lawn situation (to use it up) and got an almost zero germination from a good quality manufacturer.

Don't talk to me about Contractors Wonka, I am one myself......

Agree.

Use it for repairing run-ups, keeper scuff marks, fielders markings etc.

I know no boundaries.
