Hi all,

i m back lol (some people sigh),

right what i need is some help and advice. i m groundsman at my local village footy team and we dont have much money or equipment recently until i purchased a ride on mower with tow bar, roller and airreator.

things i need to know is when is best to airreate and roll the pitch (i wont roll it often as i know it will compact it to much)???

what to do once i have airreated it??

what work i can carry out when season finishes in April and what i d need to buy ie top spoil, sand grass seed etc

we need a new or second hand line marker and was wondering what you guys reccomend or could you point me in the right direction at all???

also if anything you guys can think of that i ve missed out then please let me know.

Before you even contemplate what you might have to buy David, what is your expected budget to be.? Once that is know some hard planning can be done.
What line marker do you have now ? you will be very lucky to find a second hand one. I once had a friend make a new box for my wheel to wheel line marker and it has worked very well for many years since. Cost was about £50. New ones cost hundreds plus the dreaded VAT.

our line marker we have at the moment is 20 odd yrs old and is falling apart wheels dont go rounf very well and the box needs replacing to be honest. is it better to use liquid in these or not??

always the budget is limited and i have ploughed bout £300 of my own money in, in the past 2 seasons to keep pitch up to some standards but have started to get more investment in so a rough figure would be inbetween £200-£500 i should have a guess at which is prob not enough but least its something lol

Do you use dry powder in your line Marker ? If you do, then you are likely to need your budget to replace that David.
After that, i think all you can do really is to seed your goalmouths, centre circle and linesman runs. If there is enough money left to apply some fert to the pitch then do so.
I would not recommend buying soil to make repairs, try hiring a rotovatore to tilth up your worst bare area's and seed into that.
So, if money allows, a couple of bags of grass seed, say £120 and ten bags of fert if you can. £150 to £200. Sorry but money gone.

yes we do use dry powder but that comes out of some other money so that isnt a factor into this and this season i ve only gone through 3-5 bags so far which is not to bad considering

We use the impact line marker, its really a top of the range spray marker from rigby taylor.
We payed £250 which was for a ex demo one. Maybe you can get the same deal.
You will have to use the impact paint from rigby taylor aswel if you use that machine, but i really cant fault it. Its brill.

We have got an old wheel marker that you are welcome to buy off us for a small cost.

We are based in cheshire.

As jim says, the impact glider and marker system are excellent, but I must correct you in that you can use concentrates diluted, you would need to use a fan nozzle and not the cone nozzle that is used for the impact paint. The machine works very well with both types of product, I have staff who have used both in the machine.
There are other very good makes as well and pitchcare did a comparison between most makes a few months ago. The biggest factor in how well they work is how well you look after your machine especially filters with the pump machines.

Regards

Steve

Don't talk to me about Contractors Wonka, I am one myself......
