Message Board - Natural Turf: Rubber Crumb

4 Feb 2010 by PeterEdmondson

Good morning all,

I've been getting some prices together for end of season (Football) renovations; and my usual contractor has suggested trying rubber crumb to help with wear and tear rather than a straight top-dressing. In fact it's possible that a mixture of the 2 treatments is what's likely to be most beneficial, I've seen big dumpy bags of this material at 1 or 2 other grounds and am seriously considering the benefits.

Have any of you got opinions as to the benefits, certainly the arguments put forward by the contractor seem compelling.
My first thought concerns the likelihood of the material been hoovered up by the rotary mower that we use!

Thanks

Hi Peter,

Don't know about football but I have used rubber crumb on high wear areas on golf tees. It does need to be well worked in to the base of the turf with hard brushing when the growth is at it's most vigorous. Basically, you need to put it down before the area gets worn or else it just sits there.

Works well on new turf. To my recollection it didn't get picked up by a cylinder mower at 12mm so you should be okay with a rotary at football pitch height.

The answer is None more black.
