Message Board - Cricket: Triple mower advice and help !

4 Feb 2010 by Craig Smith

Hi folks !

Its been a long while since I was last on here but your advice last season helped out my club no end with our purchase of a Ransomes cylinder mower for our square.
Sadly I didn't get a full season in myself as I was injured by a cricket ball in the eye whilst batting in the nets in June to which I am still recovering. I wasn't wearing a helmet as I hadn't worn one for the 20 years that I'd been playing so needless to say this season I will be !!

Anyway, I am again seeking advice and help from the wonderful people who read these articles. Our National triple mower has been in good use over the last 10 years however it seems that it has reached its final stage ! As a club we obviously need a replacement to cut our outfield - yet we are not in a great financial postion where we can pick one up out of a catalogue or even splash out £5K on a second hand one. As our club is situated between 2 Bradford League teams a lot of sponsorship and investment goes their way from the local businesses around us. There is a golf course next to us too but they are not willing to help out either. We are currently trying to raise funds for the mower as obviously time is running out before the start of preparations for the forthcoming season along with using some of the money we had set aside for other projects.

My question is thus ; Do any of you know anywhere that we could get a reasonable second hand ride on triple for around £2.5 - 3k maybe or will it be too much like hassle getting one so cheap ? Or even any that are old and in need of a little TLC and no longer in use ?
I am currently trying to contact as many golf clubs and other cricket clubs in our area - yet this costs time and money as well as our council to see if they can help out.

My apologies if this has been a bit long winded but I think I have covered all angles so the need for questions may be reduced.

Thanks for your time
Craig

Hi Craig
try this link
http://www.fnrmachinery.co.uk/stocklist.asp
There is a Toro triple on there for £2,800 plus some others. They get a lot on there.
Golf clubs are good, just walk into your local clubs and ask for the head groundsman, you might get lucky. Shame you cant go up to 3.5k, theres a good one on the Pitchcare used machinery there now. Ive bought a wicket mower off the Pitchcare used machinery, I think its a good place for reliable gear.
Try your local council, they might have an old Ransome 213 they want to get rid of.
Do you have a tractor? If so, you could pick up a decent set of gang mowers for under 2k. RT machinery have some of their site now. They advertise a link on the used machinery section here on Pitchcare
Make sure the cylinders/units have been sharpened recetnly though cos they can cost you £200 each to get done
Good luck
regards
Barry

Small club, small budget - why would you want to go down the hydraulic drive route?
You can often find a good Saxon Mk2 on e-bay for under £1000. They're solidly built, you can do most maintenance yourself, they have 7 blade cylinders so give a good finish. And you can put all the cash you save to other purposes.
You could do worse than contact the ebay seller on this link - he refurbs Allens and Saxons and may well have what you're looking for.

Jon
Is that belt driven like the Ranson 180? If so, I wouldnt touch it with a bargepole. The belt driven ones are a nightmare, slightest bit of dampness around and they seize up, clog up, no oomph, hopeless when grass if bit long or damp

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

Barry, You have obviously never used a Saxon/Baroness 180 triple, may I suggest you try one, you will soon change your mind.

Barry, your belts were not tight enough obviously, got a ransomes 180 cuts appprox 6 acres in around 1 1/2hrs very econimical will cut grass no probs 25 - 30mm long down to 12mm don't get me wrong would love to move up to a hydro but at the mo club don't have funds and besides a £4 belt to replace is a bit cheaper than a £250 hydro unit, if looked after well engine in good nick belt drivens can and often are very good buys for clubs with limited funds but as always it is horses for courses!

We have a Ransomes Triple 18 which is belt driven, will do our 3.5 acre outfield both ways (down and across) in 1 hour 45 minutes and an excellent finish.
As Martin says perhaps your belts were loose, our Triple 18 cut an extremely wet outfield last season. at approx. 20-25mm and only blocked once. (it only got that long because of waiting for some parts)
Usually set to 10-12mm I think (my brother in law does the complicated stuff I just cut the grass)
We picked them up for £1500 from a local Castle (Ludlow) who cut their grounds with it, but we have just had the full monty, ie. all blades ground, full dismantle, clean rebuild, belts replaced.........the lot for £700 including labour..........so hopefully come a few weeks time it will be like having a new piece of kit.

Have to agree to differ. 180,it was a pile of cr*p especially at beginning of season. it was professionally serviced, a nightmare if the grass was long and damp. And sometimes, the grass being longer than 25mm at beginning of season couldnt be helped.
But if people are happy with them then fine, each to his own.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.
