Message Board - Football: New pitch

5 Feb 2010 by Steve P

I have been charged with finding the right equipment to maintain a Grade C football pitch 80-20 sand soil mix on a daily basis.

As it is going to be a one man job I was thinking a three gang ride on but which is best?

And what are the other bare essentials as the club has a limited budget.

I would appreciate any help I can get!!!!

Many thanks

Unlimited water supply to go with rain gun, fertiliser for spreader. How much might this limited budget be Steve ?

Thanks guys
I'm a bit worried about this water business!
We are in the North of England and there is no provision for irrigation other than a domestic supply.

We have not set the budget yet I was just after an idea of essential bits of kit.

Steve, I think you need to apply some logic to the process of choosing your machinery. The basis of what you need starts with what maintenance regimes you are carrying out.
choose what equipment you need for your regular maintenance.
Work out what you need to hire for your very ocasional needs.
List every thing from a big tractor with vertidrain for deep spiking your pitch (look at all the different ways in which you can carry out the same operation with different equipment) to a strimmer for trimming the pitch surrounds etc.
When you have a list get some price comparisons.
Look at how much it will cost you approximately to run and maintain the machine.
When you have your final list then you can look at it with a more critical eye and mark the ones that you feel are essential, which ones would be useful and which ones are just plain wishful.
Work out a 5 year purchase plan if need be.

Oh, and include your proposal for upgrading your water source and facilities.

A good place for finding out information and prices is www.whatkit.co.uk

Also try and find out how many games and training sessions the pitch will be used for as this will determine how much and what weekly maintenance will be required.
