Message Board: Education & Training: Good manners, they are very cheap.

8th Feb 2010 by calcallaby

Many times in these forums and by private message I have responded to pleas for help or advice as have many other members of Pitchcare.
I cannot speak for others but I have found that more often than not this help/advice goes un-acknowledged, completely taken for granted, particularly when responding to PM’s via E mail. Perhaps those asking for help and advice might like to bear in mind the amount of time and trouble that people go to in answering their questions.
Recently I have written large amounts of text, copied spreadsheets with explanations on how they work, copied pictures into paint, resized them and put in explanatory text boxes. I could go on with other examples but I think everyone gets the idea.
I’m not after long E mails of grovelling gratitude, far from it, but a note saying it was received and helped (or didn’t help) would be enough. I’m not accusing the vast majority because help is usually acknowledged in the forums in one way or another.
It is those who ask in the forums or by PM and get answered by E mail mostly.
Good manners cost nothing.

Keep up the good work Cal , I for one would like to thank you publicly for the great encouragement you have personally given me at times, and I know of many who are appreciative of the help you have given to many who respect your great knowledge and experience.

It's true that sometimes those efforts are not acknowledged or totally appreciated but please keep disseminating your wisdom as best you can, especially to those who appreciate your generous and benevolent nature which is well respected in our Industry.

Loammeister, thank you for your very kind comments, very generous of you indeed.
I think there may many on here who have been ignored in this way. One springs to mind, and I do not intend to use names, a question was asked and four people responded with very positive help but had no acknowledgement at all.
One suggested going to a web site and posted a link, another offered to send the information via E-mail, all very good stuff and just what you expect from members of Pitchcare.
Fortunately those people who offered solutions will continue to do so because that's type of people they are; they want to help others in these forums.
I suggest that if you ask for help then acknowledge that help, if you think about it, the acknowledgment will usually be shorter than the question.

Good day all. I don't post on here too often but when I have, I have nearly always received a good response. What I will say is that I read the posts virtually every day. In doing so I have learnt so much from those who willing to impart their knowledge. So basically a slap on the back and a big thank you to all contibutors for making this site what it is. Cheers, Dick

I must confess that I don't always acknowledge the information I get from Pitchcare subscribers, for which I am most grateful. (could I get general absolution?) I will also confess that I start threads to enhance my limited but growing knowledge of turf management to STIMULATE DEBATE. I'm sure all information received from Pitchcare members is appreciated if not formally acknowledged. Keep on posting.

Couldn't agree more Cal, manners cost nothing, and when you consider that most on this site are professional and get paid for their knowledge, saying thankyou is a small price to pay.

Mr. Ccallaby is quite correct. Good manners are very cheap. So are bad manners and taking the ****.

Aren't they , Mr. Callaby?

Hypocrite!!
Hmm, not sure why this word was used, strong word as well as is the accusation of taking the ****, your word Aladdin, not mine. You have obviously read something here you find upsetting, I have read and re-read the whole thread and can find nothing that would promote such an attack so perhaps you could enlighten me (and others I would think) as to the cause of this attack.
I started off with a mild retribution of those who don’t acknowledge help they receive in the forums, pretty innocent stuff or so I thought, perhaps I have touched a nerve in some people.

Personally, if anyone replies to a thread Ive started and offer advice, I always respond. If someone takes the bother to send a private email with advice/help , then to not reply is indeed rude.
The great thing about this site is that whatever question you have, someone will offer experience and advice in that area.

Thats the way it should be barry glynn, I couldn't agree more.
Should I sign this Hypocrite?
