Message Board - Artificial Turf: Redgra

IMG 0100 9 Feb 2010 by Monty

Hi,

I'm thinking of updating my long jump run ups as the ash is being to work its way through as the redgra is so thin. I was wondering how i would go about adding new material and how would you consolidate it. Does this material flow through a spreader and what roller would you use.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

Hi Monty

I use to use Redgra on a baseball field many many years ago , i doubt that it would go through a spreader unless fairly dry we use to throw in on by shovel like top dressing and then roll with the cricket roller at a medium speed when damp use to set pretty firm .

I would think if you were going from ash to Redgra your first application should be well raked in .

Monty, first of all it would be best if you could try and remove any of the ash lying on top of the redgra before you start. Use a light rake (my technique would be to use the rake with the handle near to upright) When this is done you need to try and get the new material to bond to the existing and this is done by lightly spiking the top of the original with a sarrel roller. when this is done then you can spread your new material using a shovel and assuming that you have edge boards or concrete kerb edges you can use this with a set of ladders to ensure the dressing is even by dragging the ladders with some weights added down the length of the runup. Next water the surface and then walk away for a couple of hours. If on your return you feel that it will take a roller then you can roll it either by hand or with a lightly ballasted cricket roller. Generally this wok is best carried out during the autumn as this give the whole of the winter for the material to integrate together but I guess you will still be ok if you do it soon.

Barrow and screed out the best I would have thought, do not try and put down to thinly, you would be best to try and spread some of the old material (minus the clinker if possible) out to 'even out' first, then add a consistant layer, just as Mal says... sometimes with Redgra/Redpaves/Deansetts you need to firm, relevel then rewet, before compacting, getting it 'moist' throughout to bind is the aim rather than dampen just the surface or make too 'stodgy' to 'set' all bobbly.

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!
