Message Board - Artificial Turf: What type of Sand is to be applied to astro pitch?

10 Feb 2010 by marcuscoates

Hi can anyone tell me what type of sand it is that you buy to apply to an all weather astro pitch? Ours is in need of a few bags but it would be the first time the school has bought any since not using contractors who deliver and apply it. I presume it is slightly different to builders sand.

Send each player in the first team down bay with a bucket.

Hi Marcus, generally it is a sport grade dry silica but you really ought to check where your contractors were getting it from first, if this is possible so you have consistancy of material and the correct grade to prevent compaction or drainage issues. Where you are in UK can have influence too, we have several good dry sport silica suppliers or sources in SE, sure others will let you know elsewhere

and what Barry forgot to say specifically.......dont ever, ever use builders sand on an astro. It is a sharp sand with far too many fines - this will not only increase wear to the plastics but will also virtually stop the percolation rate through the surface
