we have 3 senior football and 4 minifootball pitches that have drainage installed but we need to improve the soft turf surface .I was told to add huge amounts of sand in the summer,is this correct and any advice on when to roll and also spike the piches
we are a small junior club in Swansea and would appreciate any advice or help

"....soft turf surface." sounds like excessive thatch.
It all depends on what resources you have available. First step, I would suggest, is to get a soil analysis in March including Particle Size Distribution so that you can source a compatible top dressing material.
"...huge amounts of sand (top dressing) in the summer" is essentially correct but the Devil is in the detail. Use incompatible material and you will only compound your problems.
Prior to this, however, I'd undertake some aggressive scarifying. Your pitch(es) will llook a bit messy in the immediate wake but, long term, you'll reap the benefits.
Whilst rolling has it's place it's something I'd avoid as much as possible. Aerate as much as you can when conditions permit.

Have read a council specification very recently from a council in the same area as question comes from. Apply 100 tons of washed sand. This is to a full size pitch and two mini pitches.
Barry and the rest, washed sand. This could be absolutely anything that has been rinsed under a tap could'nt it ?
How do fellow contractors deal with specs like this. Can very easily and very quickly make situations impossible.
