Message Board - Not Turf Related: Turf Protector??

17 Feb 2010 by ajames31

Hi,

In a previous post I've asked for peoples opinions on pathways, I also wonder if anyone has tried a rubber mesh matting that is pinned on top of the turf, the sward then grows through and a strong base is created, its normally used on temp carparks, but can also have a pedestrian pathway use.

If you've used it how did you find it??

Many thanks

I introduced this to a few of my paths running alongside tees. In my situation and it was a cost saving decision I regret, I laid them on prepared seed-bed. They were left for a couple of months to establish, but unfortunately, they never did establish because they were high wear areas.

If I was to do it again I would lay them on high wear resistant turf such as rye-grass or tall-fescue (preferably the later).

As Ken says, (hi Ken hope your well) IMHO in a golf scenario getting the mesh onto a strong sward and getting this to integrate by dressing is the only way it will not look unsightly.
As said on other post it will limit what you are able to do maintenance wise to the grass or to repair wear.

I do think it is a very very good product in the right situations, laid well though
