Message Board - Natural Turf: Rubber crumb

17 Feb 2010 by ajames31

Leading on from a previous post, can any recommend a rubber crumb product/supplier and give me an estimate on application rate when applying to a newly sown area that will eventually take medium-high levels of golf traffic and also if a second/third, forth application would be needed??

many thanks

Hi ajames31

Try Tebbutt Associates at Blackpool on 01253 342003 or look at this pdf which gives you some good ideas of previous users:

http://www.tebbuttassociates.com/pdf/c3taheavyuser.pdf

It's a good quality grade and can be bought bagged, there are a number of suppliers in the market now but Tebbuts do have patents out on their particular grade.

Good Luck and remember the advice about localised drainage for your pathways, no point in removing one issue and creating another.

...or even closer to home try www.pitchcare.com/shop/rubber-play-mats-rubber-crumb/rubber-crumb-for-turf-reinforcement.html

It's always right there under your nose when you go looking further afield isn't it.

Thanks loammeister, very helpful, still having a little trouble sourcing a figure for the quantity of rubber crumb to apply when sowing seed, anybody experienced this??
Thanks for the PM, will keep in mind, One further question which you may be able to answer, would to be possible in your opinion to cultivate the redpave (6"roughly) back into the soil to create an acceptable seed bed or is total removal of the path and bringing fresh soil in the only way??

Many thanks again

You'd be as well to calculate the amount of rubber crumb for use when seeding to be the same as the recommended rates for top dressing, i.e. 2g/m2 as this will give you the kind of cover in and around your seedlings that will aid germination in the way that you benefit from soil:seed contact in a 'normal' growing situation.

We once top dressed a 400m jogging track on a private residence where the soil was pretty claggy clay, so calculating the single lane to be appx. 438m2 the 2 tonnes of rubber crumb we used would convert back to 2.19g/m2 applied- prettyt uch as per recommended dosage.

On the subject of cultivating around 150mm of redpave back into the soil to create an acceptable seed bed I'm afraid that would not be a great plan. However well the material was mixed in with the soil it would be sure to at least provide different management issues from other nearby areas and at worse create potential for substantial droughting during dry periods. Yes grass will grow in a mix of soil and stone but it's very far from ideal, you may have to bite the bullet and use the excavated stone elsewhere on site. Sorry for the delay in reply, long day out on site!
