Message Board - Cricket: Tired looking square
19 Feb 2010 by Greg Spence
Visited our square yesterday and it looks a bit sad.Grass was beautifully green in October/November after end of season work.
There are lots of clumps of light brown, maybe caused by snow, and pretty much all of the sward tips are off colour.
I don't know what snow mould looks like. Is the above pretty much what you would expect in view of recent conditions.
I sprayed with a liquid iron mix to brighten things up and plan to put some fertliser down soon.
All thoughts on above welcomed.

Mine too and having spoken to my spraying contractor said it would be a waste of money to treat for snow mould. It will recover if given a good spring feed around early easter holiday.
Snow mould does look red thread without the threads and is treated in a similar way.
I have noticed a lot of worm activity on the square does people think this could be a direct reactin to the snow covering. Ian

I think Mario is the man to ask about snow mould!

I have exactly the same up here. In fact, with the annual snow fall, it looks a bit tired EVERY year!
Don't worry. Wait until the soil temperatures lift and give a light feed.
I spray with "sugars" as a pick-me-up for the grass. In my case I have our barman collecting slops from the beer trays in the Club. My preference being "brown beer" as opposed to lager. Don't know if it makes much difference. Fla Coke etc., can also be used.
(There was a mega thread on this last year which might be worth a look back at).
On my 14 pitch square, I'll mix 10 litres in 40 litres of water, which requires two fills of my Farmura walk-behind sprayer.
I do this perhaps twice, a week apart, prior to applying a traditional 5-5-10 granular or 5-4-20 liquid or similar fertiliser.
I know no boundaries.
