Message Board - Football: football pitch markings

25 Feb 2010 by mr wood

hi all got a bit of a problem

i mark footy pitch out for local village team and play myself as well but our pitch is just a bog at the moment and where the lines are is mud basically and i tried to go over the lines this morning with transfer wheel line marker and wheels that put the lines on pitch just get stuck and i end up sliding across mud without putting lines on it and was wondering what to do in this instance as we have 4 or 5 home games in next 5 weeks?????

thanks

Common problem this David, and very difficult to sort out in the short term. This is where spray markers really do come into their own as they don't rely on traction to apply the paint - do you know any local clubs who you could borrow a spray marker off?

Aside from that, the only thing that you can do is make sure that the marker is as clean as possible, and ensure that the wheels are turning as freely as possible.

i m in great abington just near haverhill which is 8 miles out of cambridge. local school use footy pitch and dont have markings etc and linton village college gets contractors out to do theirs.................

the lines have been properly burnt into the ground in preseason but is difficult to see them front a distance which is what the referee will say

How about approaching one of the cambridge colleges they tend to have grounds staff and you may find one who will mark out your pitches for a few beers. ian

David - just one quick point. You mentioned that the lines were burnt in - if done incorrectly, this can lead to the grass dying off, which in turn makes the lines difficult to mark in almost any conditions. So, just be aware that the aim is to 'tinge' the grass, not kill off the plant completely.

And this is why I personally hate burnt in lines, they just create a mess, especially when its as wet as this season when they become nearly a foot wide in places because the bare soil gets wet, picks up on boots and erodes outwards... please mark onto grass, yes it needs doing more frequently, yes you have to make the paint a bit stronger but it would be possible to mark out..
Whinge over..

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

Season close April 15th...not if the footballers have any say in it! as a norm our pitches would close for renovation around end of April, but with matches cancelled due to the snow, it will be more like the 2nd week in May,

well thats when our home games finish actual season finishes 1st may and we have like to weeks of games on tues, thurs and sats which will be tough lol.

its only a village team but village has a really good cricket team so football team gets left out and i tend to do pitch myself most of the time and have had some great reviews this yr.. have just got a ride on mower thank god as have been cutting pitch with self properelled mower lol took forever

Hi David.....If the local school won't help out with the marking equipment, then ask for a "borrow" of thier pitch in return for some volunteer work from you and your team mates.
I'm the groundsman at an Academy school and this arrangement with the local team meant i only had to 'supervise' the Academy campus winter pruning over one weekend! (basically supply the machinery and fuel)
